Been researching trip ideas for an Anniversary trip for me and my wife, 9 years, and saw Monterrey and Carmel by the Sea mentioned in the 10 yr anniversary trip thread. Was thinking maybe a 3 or 4 night trip.

Looking to get any additional info on ideas for things to do out there. Is renting a car a must out there as it doesn't look like everything is nearby.

Carmel by the Sea itself looks rather small and something you can do in 1 day I would assume. Was thinking of maybe hiking one day, discovering some beaches, driving up and down the coast. Obviously dinner at some nice restaurants each night is something we'll most likely do. Also would like to do a Winery/Vineyard Tour while out that way. Any recommendations for the Vineyards in Carmel Valley?

I saw the Tickle Pink Inn was recommended. It seems like a quiet, small hotel. Any further insight to this place anyone can give? Looking on the map it is not directly on the coast. Is there anything to do that is within walking distance of the hotel? Is the hotel location a busy area?

Any other ideas and recs would be appreciated.

Mission Ranch

This is a good steak place. I don’t know about that hotel but if you stay in town you can walk to restaurants, bars and shops. The beach is walking distance also.

Tickle Pink Inn was great. Very good restaurant with lovely views of the Pacific at sunset. Loved Carmel. Did a winery tour. 17 mile drive was pretty. There is a state park right around the corner going towards Carmel from the Inn. Did a sailboat cruise out of Monterrey.

Definitely get a car for 17 mile road thru pebble beach and drive up to the Bixby Creek bridge at sunset.

If you happen to get a clear day, drive down to Big Sur.

Stayed at the Tickle Pink Inn for my honeymoon…20 yrs ago this year. Really nice place and a great trip.

Edit: as to your questions, it’s on the inland side of Hwy 1, but it’s on a cliff overlooking the ocean, so the views are great. You just can’t walk done to the water from the hotel. Not much in close proximity, so we drove everywhere we went. It’s been 20 yrs, so, sorry I’m not much help with restaurant recs.

You can fill a 3-4 day agenda staying in Carmel by the Sea as a home base. Excellent restaurants for dinners. Can take a day trip into the valley for wine tastings/lunch. Beach is great place to kill an afternoon.

I know this doesn’t fit your specific question, but you started this post referencing anniversary trip ideas. So I will submit one.

Fly into SF/OAK, rent a car, drive down PCH, fly out of LA.

Spend 3-4 days staying in towns along the journey. Take your time and enjoy the journey. It’s beautiful. You will be spending each night at different location, so if that’s not your style - forget it.

My wife and I did that recently over the course of 2 days and wish we allocated more time for the drive. So many great towns and experiences.

Trip can also be done in reverse traveling north.

California is one of the most beautiful states that I've been to, only second to Hawaii.

If you like to play golf, we stayed at the Quail Lodge down the road from Carmel. It was very nice.

Love seeing this location pop up...we went last February and truly is one of the more peaceful areas of the country(world)... that's why it's one of the most expensive places to live as well in the country...lol, here's some info that should help without me re-typing. You can definitely do the trip in a short amount of time. Paso Robles is definitely not "napa valley" but at the same time is very fun and a great time. Could possibly spend a night there and work your way back up to Carmel area etc. LOVE LOVE LOVE that area...still follow all of the places on IG so I get a constant reminder of wanting to go back...definitely rent a convertible and enjoy every min of the drive.

The links below should help and give some info:

Our Itinerary:
Day 1: fly into LAX drive the PCH (stayed in Santa Barbara night #1 had dinner in Malibu at NOBU)

Day 2: woke up next morning and had breakfast in Solvang (Danish style town), did Wine Tasting at 3 different vineyards in Paso Robles, DAOU - HALTER RANCH - BRECON - Stayed in Paso Robles

Day 3: Big Sur Hiking Day + lunch at Nepenthe (a must). - Stayed in Monterrey

Day 4: 17 Mile Ride - Pebble Beach Lunch at 18th Green (The Bench) and Sunset on Carmel Beach (had picnic setup from a place I found on IG for the wife, she was surprised for sure) - Stayed in Monterrey

Day 5: Travel Back

Is there a "shoulder season" for this trip where the crowds and prices and (somewhat) down but the weather is still great or is the weather good enough that it's usually busy year round?

We went in February. Weather was absolutely perfect for hiking.

Was lucky because we got perfect weather 60s type weather (low at night in the 40s) where as a few weeks before we went they had a bad storm that rolled through and messed up part of PCH so it wasn't drivable past a certain point... we were lucky to have had the perfect trip

September. I went south to north. We went to LA for LSU/UCLA game then drove to Napa. We drove PCH to Monterey and stayed there a night. Then on to Napa. Total trip was about 8-9 days. Wish I spent more time on the drive than we did in LA.

FWIW, I hear driving south is better views. But can’t compare. The drive was intense at some parts.
