Heading that way in August. Staying in Carmel. Really have no plans other than a couple days of golf. Any rec's for food and drinks / must see sights? I see Carmel has several wine tasting rooms. That is intriguing.
It looks like Cali will be "maskless" and restaurants full capacity thank goodness.

Went in February.... what's yall plans? Going into Big Sur etc? Are you into Golf?
One of my fave parts of the trip we took along the PCH was our stay in Monterrey. It's a little more pricier to stay in Carmel, but both were great and we found a spot on Monterrey we stayed 2 nights at that had a huge room/fireplace/kitchen. Was great!
If you are into golf and won't be playing Pebble, I'd advise you to make a resi at "The Bench"....you get to watch the golfers finish up on 18 and have a postcard view for lunch. It's great! The drinks/food/atmosphere is perfect. Buddy of mine went for dinner and told me his biggest mistake was not going for lunch. That it was...We spent about 2 hours just relaxing. Great food/drinks. It's a simple lunch. If we didn't have a beach picnic "surprise" setup for my wife in Carmel we would have stayed longer.
Advise to do 17 mile ride in the AM, then lunch around 11:00-11:30am, pretty ideal then you'll have the rest of the afternoon etc for prob wondering Carmel then finishing up with the sunset on the beach.

Went a couple months ago:
In Carmel -
La Bicyclette was our fav restaurant
La Balena really good
Stationery was our fav breakfast spot
Carmel Valley is great, we had an awesome lunch and wine tasting at Folktale Winery, great vibes there.
In terms of activities - We enjoyed hiking at Point Lobos. Didn't make it Big Sur, but wanted to do that drive and Pfieffer Beach hikes.
The Refuge is an awesome spa in the valley.

This is exactly what I am looking for
Don't exactly have our golf plans lined up. Not staying on a Pebble property so most likely will be a day of type thing.

Yes, no doubt.
I mean if you are an OT Baller go ahead and drop the $500 to play Pebble then wrap it up with lunch at "The Bench", but simply you can just relax and soak it all in.

These are not my pictures but can give you an idea..we sat at these exact setup, we went the week after the pebble beach tournament...it was lunch so the firepits were covered and acted as our tables.
RECS:
Get a Bread Balloon for an appetizer. It's a great experience and delish.
The cocktail I got was: BENCH WARMER
Milagro reposado, chipotle sour, chili ancho liqueur, lime juice.
Dessert: It was our anniversary so they got us..
WOOD- ROASTED STRAWBERRIES
Butter-crumble topping, balsamic glaze & cheesecake ice cream

If a beer drinker, hit up Alvarado Street Brewery in Monterey. Great beers and nice little beer garden in the back. My go-to spot when traveling that way for work.

What H-Town Tiger said... great vibe/scene.

I lived there twice back in the late 90’s, it’s one of my favorite places ever. I love Spanish Bay and the bagpipes at sunset. If the aquarium is back open that’s a nice couple of hours. Whale watching was also a nice thing to do with visitors

Spanish Bay! Yes...we did not do this, but disappointed we did not...def squeeze this in!

Where did you stay? I’m looking for just one night stop over from LA to Napa.

Yes that is on our list as well.
What is the weather like in August fog wise? A.M. fog?

Head up Carmel Valley & visit some vineyards: Folktale, Holman Ranch, Cowgirl, etc.
IF you like like offbeat stores, check out Prim's Carmel General Store. Hardware store, home & kitchen stuff, decor, holiday stuff, all sorts of things under one roof.
Also in Carmel Valley---the organic brand Earthbound Farms has a farmstand on one of its original farm parcels (it's huge & corporate now, so your boxed salad mix didn't come from Carmel Valley) selling produce and cafe-type food, smoothies, teas, etc. Can be a nice change of pace from the "preciousness" of Carmel By the Sea.

If you feel like a drive down Hwy1, San Simeon is a spectacular site. Hearst Castle. Take at least 2 tours if you go there.

The Monterey Bay aquarium is a "must visit" attraction. It's first class and one of the top aquariums in the country. The kelp forest exhibit tank is awesome to watch with sea otters swimming thru the kelp.

Also be sure to do the Carmel "17 mile drive" thru Pebble Beach golf course.

Heading here in a few weeks. Thanks for all the great recommendations.

quote:Bourbon Street is the easiest whale watching spot in the country. No boat, life jacket, pier, binoculars etc. are needed. However, those pesky safety rules rules will require your fullest attention.
Whale watching was also a nice thing to do with visitors

Bernardus is awesome out in Carmel Valley. Cal Staminov has been the chef there for decades

One of the best meals I’ve ever had was at the Aubergine Restaurant in Carmel.
Michelin Guide Link
Acorn-fed pork, it was wonderful.
Large wine cellar.
