The Mrs. and I are thinking about taking a trip to South Florida this summer to enjoy the beach scenery. We usually go to Destin, but wanted to go somewhere we haven't been We were going thinking Miami, but then saw recent reviews of how dangerous it has gotten; so now we are looking at Ft. Lauderdale.

Anyone have any experience with either of these places?

Used to live in Ft. Lauderdale. How long will you be there? I wasn't much of a partier and mainly went to relax and recreate. My favorite place to go was Hawks Cay It's at milepost 61 in the keys. Nice spa, easy to get out and go snorkeling, scuba diving, or fishing. They had everything you needed there so you didn't have to get back in your car until you were ready to leave.

If you are wanting to be in town I always liked Deerfield Beach personally.

Just booked a really affordable Costco trip to Miami for November. You might want to look into it?

We've never visited either place, but there's no good reason why. Destin is five hours and can often be a pain in the arse. The non stop flight from MSY is just 2 hours so we might go back quite often if we like it.

Regarding danger, are you referring to the isolated event during spring break? I'm wouldn't be too worried about that kind of stuff in mid summer, and especially not during Thanksgiving.

The immediate South Beach area has gotten sort of trashy, but, yeah, it's not really "dangerous" in any real sense during any normal times.

Anything from just north of that immediate area, all the way through Fr. Lauderdale and beyond is fine, though. Just slightly different "scenes." I kid of dig Hollywood Beach for an old school beach boardwalk vibe, but there aren't a lot of hotel offerings there.

Beaches are much different than the gulf coast.

Yeah, the Spring Break crowd put a damper on the Miami scene for us; especially since the Mayor had to declare a State of Emergency for the area due to the amount of commotion coming from there. I am not sure if that will follow for the summer.

I would do Lauderdale and just rent a car for a day and check out places. Miami has gotten trashy in a lot of spots. I would take a drive up and down A1A both ways and check out Hollywood Beach, Bal Harbor and South beach going South and Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Palm Beach to the North. Lost of little towns along the coast in between.

We are staying right at Mid-Beach. Recs?

Better to uber up to north? Or walk?

There's got to be some appeal in South Beach, no?

I've also hear that Wynwood is cool? Worth an uber there to walk around, eat, drink?

Last time I was there was when the Saints were in the Super Bowl. South Beach was the place to be.

What street are you on?

South beach is a lot like bourbon in that it is mostly tourists and a lot of locals avoid it. I def wouldn’t skip if if you have not been there before. Go check out lincoln road mall, get a mojito at mangos, check out the beach, rent mopeds and ride around a bit, etc.

I don’t know of a whole lot around there beside hotels. Uber ior not depends on how much time you have. There’s a boardwalk on the beach side of the hotel that runs the length of the beach.

Go to fort Lauderdale and stay at the pelican Grand. Fort Lauderdale is more chill and Miami is kind of trashy.
