Check out Park Plaza Victoria. I stayed there several years ago. It's right by Victoria Station, so the Gatwick Express train gets you right there from the airport, and it's easy to hop a tube to go anywhere.

It was more American style than others, in that it was fairly roomy. They had a club or executive room on one floor with free breakfast, beer, internet (no wi fi back then). Our friends got comped a key to that room, and we used the hell out of it.

Not as nice, but fairly cheap and GREAT location is the St. Giles. A buddy who traveled there a lot always stayed there even though he could afford anything. It is walking distance to the British Museum, theaters, multiple tube stops, Soho, restaurants, Oxford Street, etc.

Damn it. Now I want to go.

If you have the cash, or an expense account, I would recommend anywhere around Hyde Park Corner...Knightsbridge and Park Lane, more specifically...We used to layover at the Hilton on Picadilly, near Buckingham Palace...also, the area south of Buckingham Palace, St James, is nice. All of these area's are centrally located Tube wise, meaning the entirety of Metro London is easily accessible.

We stayed in Hotel Mercure in Bloomsbury. I thought it was a great location and for the price it was a pretty good value. We walked to every sight we went to. Less than a mile to Soho for drinks, 25 minute walk to Big Ben/Westminster/the Eye, Tower of London isn't too far. It's a very central location and I was really impressed with the room for the price (compared to how insanely expensive most other hotels with good locations were).

Wherever you stay, get a visitor Oyster card for tube travel. You can even buy in advance and have it delivered to you before you leave the states.
This.

As to the hotel, just decide WHERE you want to stay (locale) and shop price within that area. Hotels in downtown London are like restaurants in NOLA, bad ones don't stay open long.

I have a friend who is in London frequently and likes the Holiday Inn Kensington LINK

This thread made me decide to plan a trip to London in a few weeks.

I've been looking at hotels in the Bloomsbury area, which is super convenient for tourists.

The Bloomsbury Hotel is only about $230-240 a night, maybe cheaper if through a package deal, and the Tripadvisor reviews are glowing. I think we may stay there.

Currently looking at the CitizenM Tower of London and the apartments at the Citadines Trafalgar Square.

Already rented a place in Fitzrovia but there's free cancellation so I'm not committed.
