I know the Southbank 30 years ago was considered extremely shitty, but now it is kind of hip, from what I understand?

I've done Hotwire Hot Rate twice, both times 5 star in Mayfair area, and both times got the Como Metropolitan for between $200-250 a night.

Last time I went I stayed at The Langham. It's in The West end, very historic, nearest tube station is Oxford Circus and close to a lot of the galleries and The British Museum. It had the most comfortable bed I ever slept in. Very posh. LINK

If you want a really cheap hotel, I can recommend the Euston Square Hotel. I had a nice, no frills stay there a decade ago. It's well-located and clean. Do your due diligence on this one. LINK

Convenient. Decent sized rooms. Not looking for super super cheap but definitely not expensive either.

So the tube is the most reliable form of public transport i've ever used, and it's extremely easy to get anywhere. so convenience won't be an issue. i wouldn't stay anywhere like piccadilly circus or something like that. we stayed near regents park once, and that was a nice area to be. also in south kensington was beautiful. i recommend the latter

In all honesty Holiday Inn is a good idea. They bought up most of the overflow parking at tube stops prior to the last Olympics and that makes them central to everything.

I have stayed in much worse such as the Lily Langtry in West Brompton and the best in the Savoy in Covent Garden and had just as good a time as I am NEVER in a room but to sleep.

I would suggest an AirBnB within walking distance of Kensington Gardens. You will find yourself picking underground stations on the OTHER side of the park just so you get a chance to walk through it. It's so undeniably British feeling.

I actually have had a ton of luck in Europe with AirBnB. Rome specifically, but that is a discussion for another day.

I've thought about AirBnB but the only thing that turns me off to that in a foreign country is the luggage situation. If I get there early enough nowhere to put my luggage until checkin. With a hotel or serviced apartment I can just drop it off, go do my thing until check in.

The wonderful thing about AirBnB is that you can work with the person who owns the place to see if you can "check-in" earlier. Some of the better places even have 24 hour check-in.

What makes this even easier in London is the fact that you won't have a language barrier.

I've stayed at several moderately priced hotels and I've also stayed at the Savoy. I don't know what your budget is, but if you can spring for a nice hotel in London it is worth it. London is probably the greatest city in the world right now and staying in one of its landmark hotels makes the experience even greater.

Wherever you stay, get a visitor Oyster card for tube travel. You can even buy in advance and have it delivered to you before you leave the states.
