It's $407 now for my dates of travel ... $150 less expensive to fly out of NOLA but that's a 5 hour round trip drive and potential hotel stay.

I had friends who booked same flight for $250 at Mardi Gras BUT I'm assuming with it being summer that it won't be much lower than it is now at the $407. This is flying into EWR which isn't the most convenient but I think the shuttle is like $25 per person and it's $50 per person to fly into LGA.

I'm thinking I should just go ahead and do this ... how long is too long to wait?? Plan to leave July 13 but I'm just thinking with it being summer it won't be any cheaper any closer to travel dates.

$343 from BTR to EWR

I can't stand connections, I'd probably drive to MSY to get a Non-Stop.

Good luck.

You know as soon as you book it the price is going to drop to $300 . That's always how these things work out. You're still in the 2-3 month range so don't worry too much. If you were at 1 1/2 months out, I'd be a little more worried but there's still time. But as soccer suggested, it's only $284 to go out of Baton Rouge or $250 out of New Orleans for your dates.

What's the latest "ideal time" to buy a ticket prior to travel dates??

It's just me and my daughter and I SO don't want to drive home from NOLA at night and I SO would like a half day in NYC on the day we come home.

I'm a woman and I'm picky! Surprised?? I do appreciate the help.

You're not going to like my answer, but it really depends on where you're flying from/to. If I look for flights from new orleans to dallas for next week, it's $71. Out of smaller airports like baton rouge or lafayette, you generally have to book at least more than 2 weeks away to get the cheapest price. Example: Baton Rouge to Dallas next week is $285, but two weeks away on May 11th it's $264 (same price for rest of summer).

So the absolute last date for you to purchase your NYC trip would be June 29th, but I would not wait that long. As a side note I have not seen any good july prices yet out of new orleans, btr, or msy so I know they've got to be coming soon.

And ok ... I'm playing with BTR. Would I be crazy to think that BTR and LFT are about the same size?? I have no clue.

You mean the same size airport? Baton Rouge has more flights a day to Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston than LFT so if anything happens it's more likely you're able to get to/from where you need to go on that day. Airport parking is like $8/day I think, security is a breeze

Now for you going to NYC, if you do leave from BTR, I think you should choose Delta. It's $284 compared to United's ($274) but the United flight leaves at 6am. Delta has flights leaving at 5:30am, 6:30am, 9:15am (gets to NYC at 4:15pm), or 12:10pm (gets to NYC at 6:30pm). All these flights go into Newark

Edit: Ugh, the return flight leaves Newark at 7am on Delta. Take a return flight on United, there's one that leaves at 4:50pm

Yeah, I meant in relation to price would one expect BTR and LFT to be about the same. Thanks a ton. I don't have money to throw away per se but I need to figure out what price I put on being 30 minutes (as opposed to either 2/3 hours from home once I land. AND our family can bring/pick us up so no parking. That's a plus.

Again, appreciate it.

Completely understand. For me I usually end up driving down to New Orleans from here (Baton Rouge) because the flights are so much cheaper. I'm going home to Philly this Thursday-Monday and it was $115 roundtrip on American. From Baton Rouge it was over $300.

As of now, it's $548 for you and your daughter (total roundtrip price) for those dates out of here. Leaving from Lafayette it's over $800 so it's up to you if $250 is worth the convenience of leaving from home

You are on the right track.

Add up gas to get there, and parking, possibly a hotel and the savings from MSY are gone. In that case, pay the little extra on the plane ticket and have the convenience.

I however, don't have the luxury. Flying to Orlando in June, I can pay close to $400 for BTR or AEX or LFT, or I can drive to New Orleans and fly for $120 round trip, non stop. Add in parking and driving down, plus a hotel the night before we leave and I'm still looking at only $200. So it is worth it for me to fly from MSY. I am skimping on the airline... going with Frontier!

Before anyone mentions baggage fees, I have family who refuses to fly, and will be driving, so our bags will be with them in the car.
