Coming in from Rome at 1:40 pm. Can I collect luggage, clear immigration, recheck luggage and make a 4pm to MSY? Two hours twenty minutes seems close. This will be a Tuesday in April. Otherwise stuck for the night or have to take layover in Atlanta.

I sure hope so because I have an hour and forty to make a connection from Athens to MSY at IAD coming up in May

IMO that is plenty of time. I have seen it very crowded in JFK immigration but I cannot imagine needing more than 2 1/2 hours. You will probably be waiting longer for any checked baggage to get off the plane than it will take you to get through immigration.

Collecting your checked bags will be your longest wait. If your flight to MSY is tied to your flight from Rome then rechecking luggage is simply dropping it off to attendants at a conveyor belt.

If you see that time is getting close and you haven't been through security, have your boarding pass handy and bring it to their attention.

This should be enough time but that is when all the european flights show up at JFK in T4 so immigration lines could be longer than normal. Since everything is on delta, you'll be rebooked on the next flight (whether connecting in ATL or direct the next day).

Other thing is if you see you'll misconnect due to a delay in Rome, have them rebook you in Rome to the Laguardia to Nola flight that leaves at 7:59pm (DL 2165). That'd be enough time to transfer over to Laguardia, albeit with your checked luggage.
