We are planning a trip to Italy and Greece this summer. We will be flying in to Rome on July 22 and then traveling to Chios, Greece for a wedding on July 28. The day after the wedding we will travel to Santorini for a few days before returning home.

We are having trouble deciding what to do with our time in Italy. We would like to spend a few days in Rome, but would also love to see either Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast. If possible, we'd also like to take a day trip out to the Tuscan countryside. Is this too ambitious? Between Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast (likely would stay in Positano), which would you recommend?

If you also want to hit Tuscany, it may be easier to keep heading north out of Rome to Cinque Terre. I'll be there in September.

As the previous poster mentioned, if you want to do Rome & Tuscany, then continuing north to Cinque Terre is more efficient than looping south to Posi. On the other hand, you could do Rome & south...working in Caserta/Naples, Herculaneum or Pompeii, and ending up in Posi with a side trip to Salerno (if you like Greek ruins). Depends on what you like....Cinque is full of tourists, but so is Posi.

Two of my favorite places. You can't go wrong either way. If I had to chose, I would pick the Amalfi Coast. The towns are bigger, there is more to do, and there is more to chose from in the way of nice hotels and great restaurants. We spent a week in Positano in April 2014 and can't wait to go back. It is an easy train ride to and from Rome. If you are in to hiking, or if you are going to be in Tuscany anyway, then CT would be a good choice. The 5 towns are cool and the scenery is spectacular from the trails.

I've been to both. The above post is pretty spot on.

I might add that if you do CT, you could even hop over to Eze, France. And if you do the Amalfi coast, you could hop over to Capri. Either option is excellent. I'd look at a map and figure out how to maximize your time.

Am I reading it correctly, just a day trip?

While I haven't been to CT, I think that makes the most sense for a day trip or one nighter. The Amalfi is beautiful and Positano is something special. I would reserve a full day there to just relax and maybe a day over in Capri. I've got a thread somewhere that finishes in Positano w/ a day trip to Capri. Check page 2 or the sticky thread.

I think what we've settled on is doing a Walks of Italy tour of Cinque Terre and 3 days in the Amalfi Coast.
