Is it frowned upon to book two separate one way flights instead of a roundtrip?

My wife and two children will be flying from NOLA to LAX in November. We are looking to book flights soon. My issue is this; the Southwest flight from MSY -> LAX is at a good time for us but the return trips are not. The Delta Flight from LAX -> MSY is at a good time for us, but the flight out there is not. So how much trouble would I be creating for myself by booking two seperate one way trips?

Also, any advice you can offer for flying with a 3 year old and a 1 year old will be appreciated.

I've never had an issue doing this. I'm even combined separate round trip tickets into one trip. IAD-Miami and back using British Airways Avios and Miami-St. Somewhere using AA miles round trip.

None whatsoever. I do it all the time.

The bookings won't be an issue at all. Just changes where you go to/from the aiport.

get a tag for the stroller and gate check the strollers and they will be waiting for you when you step off the plane you arrive at each destination. if the one year old is still on a bottle, try feeding as the plane is taking off so that the sucking sensation will help his/her ears. if you trust the 3 year old with gum, that may help them as well.

She'll get as many bottles as she can take on those flights.

No but you may get a more extensive search.

All of the above info, and tell the three year old to hold his nose and blow until he feels his ears "pop". This will equalize pressure if his head starts to hurt. I would also advise some type of medicine to make them sleep. haha

I'm getting ready to do this very same thing from MSY to Denver. Will save me about $100. Also, since I have a dog, I always try to book nonstop if I can.

Make sure your electronic devices are charged before the flight. Download some cartoons. Gum for older kid to help with ears. And ALWAYS gate check the stroller!

Google Flights will book two one way tickets rather than a roundtrip if it's cheaper. That's what I've been using lately to book flights. Flew roundtrip New Orleans to Philly for $180. Frontier Airlines there, United back.

Rest easy, the airlines don't care one bit if your itinerary is one way with two different carriers. To them you're just another passenger going somewhere.

A wife would probably have a problem with that scenario.
