I have visitors the week before thanksgiving, and they start a 30+ hour journey from MSY to SYD the day before thanksgiving.

I flew one time on Thanksgiving Day to Manila and there was hardly anyone there.

Not too bad on Wednesday. Thursday is a nightmare but Wednesday isn't bad at all.

I have never found MSY to be a crowded or busy airport, the staff there just sucks, probably one of the worst in the country at efficiency.

Have them check in online and give their bags to the skycap outside and avoid dealing with them. Should be no issues.

I usually fly from MSY to Dallas the tuesday/wednesday before thanksgiving and haven't found it to be too bad. Just anticipate 2 hours and they should be fine, especially if it's for just a departure. Good advice above on using the skycaps, if there's long lines inside it's usually better outside

The thing about New Orleans is if you need something done in a hurry, you're screwed. If you need someone to bend the rules or pull a fast one on them there is no better place to be.

In 2010 I witnessed a 21 year-old allowed through security at MSY without any private or government-issued ID.

The TSA agent said "Hon, I'ma let you get on this plane, how you get on yo' return flight is yo' prolem."

It WAS nice but at the same time we are a society of laws and rules for many important reasons.
