We need to get from Split, Croatia to Vienna. Renting a car is almost as expensive as flying and there are no trains. I have been told by some European friends that it is nicer than taking a Greyhound here in the states. Anyone have any experiences?

Damn thought there were trains everywhere in Europe. A bus would have to suck no matter the continent.

Took a Taxi from Austria to Germany about an hour ride and shot the bull with the Taxi Driver who spoke great English.

I took a bus from Tallinn to Riga. It was cheap and comfortable plus the seat had a screen with movies, etc.

I took a bus from Dubrovnik to Split and we had to stop for a passport check in Bosnia( they have control over a tiny strip along the coast)

To get from split to Budapest we took bus to Zargreb and then a train( worst train ride ever) can you get a train from Zagreb to Vienna?

We can, but it is not ideal for our time constraints. There aren't too many trains that leave from split to Zagreb or Zagreb to Vienna. We wouldn't make it to Zagreb in time to catch the train to Vienna until the next morning.

I know the struggle, we did a 6am ferry from Hvar to split, bus from split to Zagreb, showed up just in time(literally running from bus to train station) to catch train to Budapest and then got to Budpaest at 10pm that night and found an airbnb. the longest worst travel day ever. We did it all without a plan too got really lucky

I took a bus from southern portugal to seville spain. Not the most comfortable trip, but it was much cheaper than dropping the rental car off across the border.

Getting around Croatia is a pain. We took the train from Budapest to Zagreb then caught a flight to Dubrovnik. After hanging out in Dubrovnik for a while we took the ferry to Hvar and Split. From Split we took the bus to Mostar and then the train to Sarajevo.

ETA - To OP, I would not take a bus from Split to Vienna. I would think that would be 12+ hrs. I would just eat the cost and fly or take a bus to somewhere I could catch a train. Renting cars and dropping off in another country is too expensive. All depends on how much you value your comfort/time.

It is 12 hours on the nose. Yea, the planes are expensive. Busing to a city to catch a train to Vienna is more expensive, and only shaves about 2 or 3 hours off the trip. Not worth it.

I took a bus from Dubrovnik to Plitvitche National Park and had a passport check in Slovakia. Bus ride was fine. I also took a bus from Stockholm to Oslo becuase they were doing work on the train track. That ride was a nightmare as there was very little room between seats and no a/c. I'll be taking the Tallin to Riga and Riga to Vilnius buses this summer but the reviews are good on those routes.

We have decided to take a bus from Split to Dubrovnik on Saturday, stay over night, and fly out of Dubrovnik to Vienna at 5:30pm Sunday. $118. I think we got a good deal.

What is your travel date?

FlyNiki has a one hour NS flight from Split to Vienna, I checked pricing one way for a random date in July and the total fare was $114.

FlyNiki

Trust me. We know about Niki. A couple weeks ago they had that same flight out of Split for $77 on a Saturday. Buddies drug their feet and it disappeared. Next best nonstop fair out of Split on Sat. for 5 guys was $576. We tried looked at flights in and out of about every sizeable European city looking for a good cost/time balance.

We originally didn't want to fly out of Croatia on Sunday because it would have cut our time in Vienna, but we decided that since we got to see another city and still fly out pretty cheap, it was worth it.
