I am going to Tokyo for five days and then Kyoto for four. I have never been and have always wanted to go. Just a vacation. I will be staying in the Shinjuku area in Tokyo.
Restaurants, sites, weird Japanese shite? Let me know.

Of course I have made plenty of plans. Just want to see what the OT'ers have done...
I find I get suggestions on here that I otherwise would not get.

Disneyland in Japan
It depends on what experience you want.
You can keep it pretty much American if you want from both food to culture or you can experience more of the Japanese side of things.

They cook their eggs runny. You can order them American style or you can just have lunch for breakfast.
It's expensive as shite and a surprising number of places don't take credit cards. A buddy of mine is there now and he's pulling $400 a day out of the ATM and going right through it.

shite, no American things. I get plenty of that here. Really just looking for unique suggestions for restaurants and things to do from people who have been there and can tell me firsthand about the experiences.

Your buddy is either really having fun or doesn't know how to plan, budget, and look things up before he does them. My sister went and you spend as much money as you want just like any other major city. You can go to NYC and spend a grand a day or 100 a day, just depends on the person...

Go to the bar on the 38th floor of the Mandarin Oriental. One of the best cityscape views you will ever see.
Oriental Lounge
Also go have yakitori in Ginza somewhere.

He's a doctor. He can afford it. He likes to bitch about it to me but he doesn't compromise to save money when he travels.

That's cool. I'm kind of the same way actually. I like to splurge on meals, yet I hate to spend a ton of money on hotels. They are just a place to sleep when I travel.

How old are you and what kind of music do you like? Really.

I am 40 years old and really enjoy rock music, mostly classic rock and 90's stuff.

You won't be able to reserve a top rated sushi omakase meal if you wanted to do that. Might get lucky for a cancellation.

He speaks good English and was on Anthony Bourdain. Could possibly sneak in there. $200/person for food/sake.
Airport shuttle is cost efficient way to get to hotel without having to deal with trains if coming from NRT. Depending on where you're going in Tokyo the trains can be a decent deal and very efficient.
If flying in to HND you lucked out. It's much closer to city center.
Taxis are expensive.
Make sure you have JPY coins if you want to use subway. They don't accept CC.
English is not widely spoken and signage in English is not always common either. Know where you're going or have an unlocked phone with GPS or get a local SIM.
Get a custom knife made in Ginza.
Find a bar/yakitori shop on Piss street.
Sumo is really cool, but only offered a handful of times per year.
