I'm looking to get opinions on what to do in Florence. The wife and I are going to Italy this year and have 4 nights in Florence. Are there any must sees or any off the beaten path ideas. I appreciate the suggestions. We are doing the duomo and uffezi. I'd like recommendations for day trips in Tuscany as well. Thanks.

Boboli gardens/Palazzo Pitti
Santa Maria Novella antica farmacia museum/shop for bath/soap/cosmetics
The many small artisan shops in the Oltr’Arno neighborhood
Accademia gallery for Micheangelo’s David (worth seeing in person, try to go early when it’s less crowded)
Mercato Centrale food market, to see the beautiful way the Italians handle retail food displays, plus the Nerbone lunch stall in the far back corner for a tripe or beef sandwich, a bowl of ribbolita (bread soup), and a seat to watch the action
Santa Maria Novella antica farmacia museum/shop for bath/soap/cosmetics

We did a wine tour in Tuscany with grape tours and it was great. Look into hotel David, the staff their is amazing. Florence is my favorite city in the world so far

Art galleries are fantastic particularly Uffizi and Accademia. The Ponte Vecchia at night. Food is fantastic. Eat Butter Chicken at Trattoria Sostanza. Eat gelato. Drink the table wine. Take a day trip to the Tuscan wine region (Chianti Classico region is closest).

On the phone currently and can add much more however a “must eat” for me is Buca Mario for bistecca alla fiorentina and grandmothers pie for dessert.
Also, best gelato we had all through Italy was in Florence such a romantic city. Slow down and walk the city at dusk. Make you way up the hill and take in a sunrise and the best view of the doumo.

I would go to the Basilica di Santa Croce, it houses the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, Dante, and Machiavelli.
Also I would make sure to take a look at the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, it is located in the same square as the Duomo, but houses much of the art that has been collected and commissioned from Florence churches over the centuries.

Also.. Florence is very well known for their leather craftsman. I’d suggest making a visit to Bajola if you’d like to browse some of the nicest , reasonably priced leather goods around. All hand made in Italy ????

Wife bought a leather jacket that was last years style for a decent price. You will find better deals the further away from the city center

We hired a guide through Florence Custom Tours for the day when we went in July. Best money we spent. We had our twin 8 yr olds with us and they still talk about things they learned. Absolutely would do it again instead of jacking with lines and wandering around trying to figure the place out.

We are going in March. We will stay at a villa about 20 miles south of Florence for a week, then spend a couple of nights at a hotel in Florence. The thing I would suggest considering is gelling a rental car for at least one day and drive around the Tuscan countryside. You can drive to Siena and explore some medieval hill towns along the way such as San Gimangiano (sp) and Volterra. You can visit some of the wonderful wine villages in Chianti country off of Hwy. 222. A little past Siena are the great two of Italy's great wine towns, Mantalcino where they make Brunello, and Montepulciano where they make the Vino Nobele. From reading previous posts on here I have put Sostanza on my list of restaurants to go to.

Try to set up a guided tour through the Vasari Corridor. It will take you from the Uffizi all the way to the Boboli Gardens and Palazzo Pitti.
The Accademia to see Michelangelo's David was mentioned earlier in the thread. If you can get there early to beat the crowds or book a line-skipping tour, then I'm all for it. Otherwise the lines are ridiculous and it is the only real must-see in the building.
Go to Sienna as a day trip.
I see that Basilica di Santa Croce was also mentioned. Can't skip seeing where a Ninja Turtle was buried. Speaking of Ninja Turtles, Donatello is also buried in Florence in the Basilica di San Lorenzo.
