Not sure if this better posted here or outdoor board but I will be in Denver end of June for a work trip and wanted to take advantage and use a day and a half to head into the front range area for an over night camping trip.

I'm an experienced in hiker / backcountry camper but do not know the area. A buddy and I are looking for a scenic hike with an off the beaten path camping site (just one night, going on a Thursday to hopefully miss crowds) with a places along the way to get a few lines wet with the fly rod. Ideally our hike would end us up at a campsite with a pretty high elevation / view. Max drive distance from Denver maybe 2.5 hours...

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
TIA

Go to Breckenridge. Hike the CDT or ColoradoTrail from there. You can hike from Breckenridge to Copper Mountain. Then take the shuttle back to Breckenridge.

Not sure about fishing along the way.

For a quick afternoon hike you could hike the trails around Red Rocks and it's only a 20 or so minute drive outside Denver.

RMNP is about 90 minutes away...take your pick. It's stunning.

That is a terrible idea. Great views but brutal hike and for someone not acclimated to the altitude it could go very bad. There are way better hikes for a tourist.

He said experienced backcountry hiker. The miles aren't that long. You're in Colorado, elevation is everywhere.

Thanks to all who posted in the topic.

Ended up going with RMNP. We just got a confirmation we are reserved for a backcountry permit at Pear Lake in the Wild Basin portion of the park. Ill give a post hike/camp review if anyone is interested.
