I have an extra day to spare while visiting Rome. Has anyone ever been on a day trip from Rome? Looking for any suggestions.

Pompeii via rental car for a day - and I'd highly recommend it. (Part way to Pompeii I looked up and there was Monte Casino which was nice to see (if only from the highway) because the WWII battle there is pretty famous and it's easily recognized).

You can also take public transportation to Ostia Antica just outside Rome. It was the Roman port and has a decent set of ruins too. But it's not Pompeii.

You could possibly do Florence by train which would be really good if it leaves you enough time.

We did Pompeii as well, but you couldn't pay me to drive in Italy. We took the train to Naples and then you get on a small commuter train in Naples that takes you to the ruins.

Try taking a train to Naples then head over to the Amalfi Coast.

We rented a car one time and went to Tivoli. Hadrian's Villa was interesting and the fountains of Villa D' Este were a beautiful sight to see. Another nice, short trip is to drive down the Appian Way to the Roman hill towns such as Frascati and Castel Gondalfo.

I did a day trip from Rome to Florence that was a long day but very manageable. Trains were easy with lots of options.

Also did a wine tour in Frascati. I know there may be better places for wine tours, but it was a nice town and so close to Rome. This is the tour that I took, the half-day one. The restaurant that they use for the lunch after the vineyard tour was also memorable.

Yeah, that's probably a better way. I had a friend who was determined to drive a rental car so I was along for the ride.

Rome is such an overrated POS city. Moreso now that it's hotter than frick this time of year. I would drive to :

Capri
Amalfi Coast
Pompeii (skip Naples lol)
Hadrian's villa (really amazing)
Ostia Antica
Assisi - about two or three hours drive. Really beautiful historic little town

Driving outside of cities in Italy is simple. I agree with ythat u about driving in cities, particularly Rome.

Orvieto is a cool hilltop town about an hour and a half away. Beautiful medieval town - have to take a funicular to get to the old town on top of the hill. Tenuta Le Velette is a fantastic winery just a few minutes away.
