Have a trip planned there this summer to attend a Cubs game and staying around Miracle Mile. Still a good idea?

I was there about a year ago this time and despite all the news stories of rampant crime, I never saw anything sketchy. We stayed near Miracle Mile.

Go to search, and look up Chicago.

There has been many many threads on this board about where to stay/food/etc.

Thats the easier route and you'll get alot of the knowledge you are looking for!

Since OP provided no context, I'm just going assume he's referring to the few hundred teens that descended on downtown over the weekend. Honestly, feel like this has happened about once each year since COVID. Not sure if previous years got as much coverage, but it was organized on social media and definitely not a great look after the mayoral election.

There are just a few people on this board that live here and can confidently answer what you're asking. I don't blame visitors for considering alternate travel plans, as the videos paint an unsettling image. Nothing about this is ideal, but take some comfort knowing most of what happened was south of Magnificent Mile. The Loop is not far, but didn't extend to where you are staying + north side neighborhoods were untouched / pretty far removed.

In my opinion, you'll be fine. Don't want to speak in absolutes, but I'm coming up on a decade in August of living here and, personally, have never feared for my safety.

That is the information I was looking for. I felt it was still a great place to visit, but my wife was feeling a little uneasy about it, so I reached out to the best place to find out info Tigerdroppings! Thanks again for the information.

I hear ya. Like I said, what happened over the weekend is not ideal, but I wouldn't categorize it as any sort of common occurrence. Obviously, you wouldn't want to see it at all, but is what it is.

In general, The Loop is just a bit shitty. Dies pretty quick after the 9-to-5 crowd goes back to the neighborhoods and suburbs. It's ripe for shite like this to happen. Magnificent Mile and Gold Coast are well-lit, populated places that haven't gotten much attention from the vandalizing crowds since the George Floyd riots. I'm confident that where you're staying is more than OK.

As for the neighborhoods, most crime is pocketed in the far south, west and north sides. Not completely contained, of course, but I can't imagine you should feel unsafe going to a Cubs game.

Hoops,

I appreciate you commenting on this. Helps me out alot with my wife. I didn't want tancel, because Wrigley is a bucket list thing for me, but I also wanted her to feel safe as we went. I know bad things happen everywhere, and it's just the world we live in today unfortunately. But thanks again.

Earlier this year, had someone threaten to rape my significant other while we were walking down the Magnificent Mile at around 7pm. And the trains are absolutely disgusting.

But still had a good time. City is a lot of fun, tons to do, food is amazing. Would return. Practice the common sense street smarts and you'll be fine.

Most weekend visitors ride the Blue and Red Lines, which aren't fantastic - not totally unexpected, though, given how expansive their routes are.

I'm always amazed by the Brown Line. Helps that it goes through the wealthier north side neighborhoods (Old Town, Lincoln Park, Lake View, Lincoln Square, Ravenswood, Roscoe Village), but it's usually a quiet, well-maintained train. Was on the Brown Line my first five years in Chicago. Have since been on the Blue Line between Wicker Park and Bucktown - sometimes will get one of the newer trains, but usually the shitty ones

I also live here and second everything hoops said.

Would also add that depending on what your travel-style is, you could stay in a neighborhood. It will mean either a)an expensive boutique hotel or b) and airbnb.

Most tourists stay downtown because a) that's where the hotels are, b) downtown is what people think of when they think of a city, c) they are traveling with kids and that's where all the museums are.

But Chicago's life is in the neighborhoods. Even more so in the summer.

Ubered from the airport because it was late when we got there. Took the blue line to the airport on Sunday morning and it was pretty much fine.

Red line was gross lol and just never felt 100% safe on it. Could just be small-town me talking, but reading Reddit it appears to be a common feeling though.

Apparently we lucked out though because we never had any train delays?

Field Museum was one of the finest natural history museums I've ever visited.

When I go back, I'm staying out in the neighborhoods.

100%! Something I always try communicating in these Chicago threads. I understand many weekend visitors like to stay downtown, and it's a completely acceptable option for the museums, boat tour, etc., but exploring neighborhoods is such a good option - it's where everyone goes out to bars, restaurants, etc. Definitely the lifeblood of Chicago.

I’m taking my two teens there in May, will be our first time there. I love seeing neighborhoods in different places. Any specific recommendations? Obviously we can’t hit up the bars.
We are staying near the airport.

Ive been here a little over 8 years and I don't think Ive even seen a fist fight in that time...

I live in the Ukrainian Village and work in the West Loop, so not out in the burbs...

How old are your kids? What do they enjoy? How long are you here?

Three nights, a 15 and 14 year old.

Reading through some other threads on here, I’m thinking of renting the electric bikes down by the lake and then doing Sluggers and a tour of Wrigley field (Cubs are out of town that weekend).

Yeah, I'd focus your area to Lincoln Park and East Lakeview. These are going to feel lively during the day and are more family oriented.

But with kids that age, downtown is going to be the draw.

Would agree that Lake View and LP are, likely, the best two options with a couple teenagers - hitting the zoo and biking down Lakeshore Trail will give the kids some pretty fun skyline views, alongside the water (beautiful color during the summer months).
