Going to Chicago for the week of Fourth of July. I have tentative reservations at a condo/apt in The Loop area not far from the Navy Pier. Is this the best neighbohood to stay at for the 6 day trip? Already have bleacher seat tickets to see the Cubs on July 5th!!
Any other suggestions on what to do would be appreciated?

Some Chicago people will probably chime in, but we were advised to skip the pier. We were there for the Fourth last year.
We stayed closer to the water tower area and walked to tons of stuff. Did a Cubs game, which was great, ate pizza, went to the parks, did the art museum. I would definitely recommend the architectural tour to start one of your mornings. It was great. There are a number of great steakhouses to choose from, but we spent a lot of time just walking from place to place and getting beer and apps.
It was like 72 degrees and sunny, so we wanted to be outside most of the time.

The Science and Industry Museum is awesome.

There are a few other brewerise up there. Goose Island was about the best.
Also, try to get some Chicago mix Garrets popcorn.

I did brewery tours at Half Acre and Revolution. Both were pretty good. Half Acre is really small and we had to line up in the morning.

Buy some Kevlar and watch the Hunger Games on the Southside.

Architectural boat tour one morning, but book your tickets ahead of time through the Chicago Architectural Foundation because they sell out. Watch the fireworks from Oak St or North Ave beaches (yes there are beaches!).
Portillos for a dog, Cubs game if they are in town (no need to see the White Sox, or go south of 18th and Michigan for that matter). Walk along Grant/Millenium Park.
The art museum is fantastic if you are into art. Wicker Park/Bucktown is a cool neighborhood to walk around and grab a beer. Old Town and Lincoln Park as well.
Don't let the media scare you, unless you are in the wrong part of town (which you will have no reason to be) you are fine.
CTA is a great option to get around, both train and *gasp* bus. Yes our buses are actually good. However, uberX and Lyft are plentiful.
Enjoy!!

Portillos is the most overrated Chicago thing around. Any gyro or hot dog joint around has the same food and quality. I don't get its popularity. There will be 20 plus cars in the drive through at times. Boggles my mind.
