Maybe that used to be the case, but not so anymore.

I haven't been since 2013, so it certainly could have changed.

Breckinridge is a lot nicer, but it is better for beginning skiers. Can't go wrong with either though. Also skiing is way way way easier to pick up than snowboarding. You need better balance in control if you're doing snowboarding, but it's a good challenge. Skiing is still more fun to me though.

A Basin has difficult parts, but the lower greens are some of my favorite in Summit County. A Basin is a great spot for beginners because it's not as overwhelming as some bigger spots IMO. The Molly Hogan bunny hill is next to the parking lot. Very little walking. Relaxed atmosphere. Parking lot drinking.

A Basin is great for everyone.

Agreed

A-basin gets a bit icy up top but the lower runs and ski school areas are tops for beginners IMHO, way less crowded and easier to navigate.

I actually prefer to stay in Frisco and enjoy all the area slopes. To each his own I guess.

Never been to Breckenridge but went with a group of family members with all skill levels and ages from 20-60. everyone had fun, plenty of good slopes.. It's about 2 hours from Denver.

If it's a family trip then go to Breck. No question.

Way more to do incase someone doesn't want to ski the entire trip which is very likely.

Don't factor in difficulty. Both have learning areas and plenty of green/blue runs.

What is? Staying in Frisco? We were considering there or Silverthorne....the towns seemed to have decent lodging and food options. We were going to bus to Copper everyday. Would you advise against it? I was just looking for a budget conscience option and apply the savings to ski lessons, gear rentals etc. for multiple days.
With all the responses recommending Copper we have decided to spend our time there. They seem to have a great tubing hill as well that should keep us entertained.

Not sure what his issue was but staying in Frisco gives easy access to all the area resorts but is less crowded and a bit more family friendly in my opinion, have stayed in Silverthorne before and it was great but it was quite a while back so I will not comment on it too much.

Either is just a short drive to any resort you wish to ski if you rent a suv or take the shuttle if you prefer.

I have stayed on the resort with ski in lodging but felt more limited in my options and honestly it was just not worth it as anything else other than skiing one wished to do required transportation.

Honestly I would take the recommendation of anyone who was so certain their choice best fits everyone else with a grain of salt, what is best for one group may not fit another's needs at all.

Either way you should have a blast, likely will head back up mid-January myself.

I believe he was just suggesting that it would be easier on inexperienced skiers to stay on-site, and he is correct. Hauling ski gear to car, driving, paying to park, unloading,....etc. It can be a hassle, but you will enjoy yourself. Ideally, stay on site. Less time doing work and more time having fun.

If you have young kids staying on site is my preference. You don't have to load up the car or get everyone on a bus and can save a ton of time not having to commute to and from the mountain. Plus if someone wants to quit skiing for the day before everyone else they can easily go back to the room. What you may save dollar wise you will lose in time spent traveling and have an increased hassle factor. I've done both and to me if I have large group I always choose on mountain lodging.

Yeah, sorry I was assuming that you might be traveling with young kids that have never skied before. It might be difficult getting everyone on the same page hauling gear in the morning and returning.

Don't stress about it though. Regardless where you stay or decide to ski, you'll all have a great time in Summit County.

breck is great. perfect powder every time.
i'm a sucker for copper because it was the first mountain i skied. copper is easier.
breck is better for the more technical skier. copper has more kids.

I said it would take 2-3 days to cover the entire mountain, not ski for just 2-3 days.
