My wife and I are visiting Bologna for a wedding in early October. We are trying to plan the surrounding part of our trip out. Our options include:

Florence (a must do)
Genoa
The Dolomites (I’m a mountains guy)
Milan
Lake Como
East Coast on down to Rome

We can’t do them all, and will return in the future. What say you?

I’m thinking WTFS in Bologna for the festivities, Sun and Monday in Florence, T-Th in the Dolomites. What say you?

It’s really hard to beat Lake Como. Florence is my least favorite place in Italy I’ve been to outside of Rome, FWIW.

Florence is close to Bologna and is easy to get to. I would spend the extra time in Florence and the Tuscan countryside and fly home from Florence. Save the north for the next trip.

You could probably make a decent by staying right in that corridor. A day or two in Modena, maybe a day or two in Florence. Head out into Emilia Romagna or Tuscan countryside one day. Doing something similar in late May.

I like what you picked out although you may want to cut a day in Bologna and add a day in the Dolomites. I love Florence. However from Bologna you can daytrip to Modena (where balsamic vinegar is and the Ferrari museum is located). Parma isn’t far either and we know what comes from there, the king of cheese.

We did a week in Modena a couple years ago and a day trip to Bologna. I really enjoyed it, was a cool college town. We did a food walking tour which was really nice, went to the cathedral, and walked around the old university.

Assuming two of those days are wedding related I would do one day in Bologna then try to day trip somewhere else on one of the free days (Modena, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Bobbio for very small town, or a wine/balsamic/parm tour).

Florence is pretty awesome if you can stretch it out for more than two days.

Tuscany and Emilia Romagna are my favorite places in the whole world. Would seriously consider retiring to there one day.

It’s my favorite by far. Maybe my favorite anywhere.

You’re nuts.

I go to Northern Italy every year for work and stay in Milan for about 10 days. Lake Como is very cool. Went to Bologna for the first time last year and I think one day is plenty. The best part was the food. Other than the food, this was the most interesting piece of art we found….

No clue what the Italian writing says.

You almost definitely are not flying into Bologna, so I’d consider starting elsewhere we you do fly into. The first day is half day of jet lag/ tired so don’t over plan.

I would say with your list and time 4 nights in Bologna is too much. You should probably try to either fly into Milan and do Dolomites or fly out of Rome and do Rome, Tuscany, coast, Bologna.

I see you didn’t say time actually, so that all depends on what you have. It’s 2.5 hours from Florence to Milan and 2.5 hours from Florence to Rome, so you are about in the middle of the two for the wedding.

Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Volterra, San Gimignano, Siena can’t be beat.

Being in Bologna for three nights is a non-negotiable. It doesn't mean that we can't make daytrips outside the city. What would you think is best?

Also considering flying into Innsbruck, renting a car, and starting with the Dolomites.

As I said earlier I think three nights in Bologna is great. The food is fantastic there and you can easily daytrip to Parma and Modena.

VaBuckeye,

I tried searching but came up empty handed. What’s the name of that enoteca you love- what to say it’s somewhere in Tuscany?

I don’t mean to speak for VaBuckeye but I can answer this. There are two of them.

One is Enoteca Falorni in Greve, the heart of Chianti Classico country.

The other is the one in the fort in Montalcino, the heart of Brunello country. Enoteca la Fortezza.

^^^^^^

What geauxpurple said. La Fortezza is all about Brunello and Montalcino is a great little town to walk around. There's a restaurant in the center of town with a large glass circle where you can see below. The food there is fantastic.

I also love Greve for the enoteca and the pie shaped piazza in the middle of town. It's all about the Chianti Classico.

Ty both. Had La Fortezza in my map but couldn’t remember the one in Greve.

Something to consider OP is if you will rent a car. I’d highly recommend one for seeing the mountains. It’s expensive to rent a car in one country and return it to another, like a one way fee but worse. But Tuscany area is great to see by car also, big cities in Italy certainly not good for a car but parking can be found. Rome I’ve read has more cars per citizen than any city in Europe.

Ferrari factory would be a great tour. Not too far from Bologna if I remember correctly.

It’s just south of Modena.
