I feel like I have this bug inside me, just eating away do just do something like this.

I'm 30, have no kids, no wife (although a gf), and feel like I'll never really have this opportunity again.

I work for myself and make decent enough money to fund it. Something that I could jump right back into when/if I come back.

I always say my number one goal in life is to travel the world and experience as much as possible. My gf and I go on a couple trips a year, but I just feel it's not enough. It's not satisfying this craving I have to just go. I mean why not? When I'm on my death bed I don't think I'd ever regret the decision. Nobody says "I wish I would've stayed home and worked more" on their death bed.

I hate monotony. I hate routine. When I spend too long at home doing the same work, eat, sleep, weekends routine I go crazy. This life doesn't appeal to me. At least not right now.

Anyone ever embarked on such a journey? If so, what did you leave behind? Where did you go? How long? And how did it change your life?

Do it. Like you said, you won't regret this later in life.

What made you pick Alaska?

Did you have family or anything you left behind?

Is that the only place you went?Do you still live there?

My SIL did after hurricane Katrina. Moved to San Francisco and never came back.

Graduated from Lsu, worked 6 months then got a working holiday visa for Australia. Bought the one way ticket to Australia and lived and traveled there for 8 months then traveled SE Asia for 4 months. Best year of my life and would highly recommend doing it. If you think you can easily get work when you return from traveling you should go for it. If you end up not liking it after a couple months you can always buy a flight back home.

Alaska looks more and more attractive to me each day. Unfortunately, I work on golf courses so not too many to choose from in AK.

Wish Girdwood had a course. That place has been calling my name.

Did it a couple of times. First to Uganda, then to Colorado.

No regrets.

When I went to Uganda, my wife and I left jobs and family and that's about it. We were living in an apartment and were able to sell most of our things and have family take care of the rest. Colorado was a different transition. Wife stayed behind for several months before joining me. Sold house, changed careers, etc... Life has never been better.

Sounds like you already have a safety net. The longer you wait to pack up, the harder it will be for you to embark on your adventure. TD will still be there wherever you land. Goodspeed

better yet get some work on a big tanker out of south LA, see where that takes you. Then from there hop onto another. See the world. meets its people. eat its food. write a journal. Turn it into a book.

This is what 49% of me wants to do. Except the journal part, I suck with English and writing. But the other 51 percent of me wants to meet someone and start a family. if I get to 35 and that hasn't happened you bet your arse im seeing what the world is really about

How do you feel it impacted your life since then?

That's pretty awesome, but a tad different from my situation. I feel like traveling straight out of college is an easier transition (if you have the money), as opposed to working, building a career for 5+ years, growing some roots (albeit small ones), then just jumping ship.

What made you pick these destinations? Especially Uganda?

How long were you in Uganda?

I assume you're still in Colorado? How long have you been there?

Do it. I don't want to say I regret not ever doing this, because when I was in a situation where I could do it, it didn't cross my mind to actually do it.

I farm, but the first couple years out of college I was really just overpaid general labor while I "learned the ins and outs." Being in that situation at the right time scored me a couple of really nice bonuses around this time of the year. Back then I was focused on deer hunting and stupid shite like that. Didn't care about what else was out there. Idiot. I should have taken that money once or twice when I didn't have any off season responsibilities and just said frick it for a few months, go up to the mountains and work on a ranch, ski resort, whatever and came back in March when farming season starts back going.

Wish I was smart enough to see that then... Now, I'm getting married in a month. She has a job she can't leave, and I have obligations on the farm that keep me here during January and February.

I was 28, south east asia is one of the worlds best renown backpacking destinations. the only thing thats expensive is getting there. Food is great and cheap. Women are beautiful. Hotels that are 4 stars $30 a night & hostels $5 a night. Plenty people backpacking the area with you. Great beaches and temples.Friendly people.

It's completely different than South Louisiana, but yet still has a lot of the same qualities...outdoors are amazing and the summers are great.

You never have nothing to do, there's always something!

Everybody in immediate family lives in the South.

I've gone other places to visit, especially on my travels to Alaska, but yes I live here now, probably permanently

Of course not in Girdwood, but they have two golf courses in and around the Palmer area that I haven't played at yet, but plan on it during the summer.

awesome thanks for the info.

A few more questions if you don't mind. Sorry, I'm just very serious about this and would like as many opinions as possible from people who've done it.

At 28, did you leave behind a job or significant other?

How hard/easy was it for you to raise funds? And what kind of financial position were you in when you went home?

TIA
