The bus ride is truly more terrifying than any trek.

Seriously, I'm not one who's afraid of much when it comes to danger and adventure. I've been on plenty of mountains, snowboarded double black diamonds, been skydiving, etc.

I had to close my eyes for much of the bus ride

Ya I read about a bridge washing out too not long ago. Hopefully that's not the part that kills me. I'll make my wife sit on the inside seat.

Had to look that up, doesn't look like much fun, amazing views though.

Skylodge Peru. Roughly $300 per person.

MLSter is scaring me off from going to Peru, really want to check it out.

His report shouldn't scare you.

90% of the planet is a shite hole outside of the US and Europe. Japan/Australia/NZ exceptions.

Find out for yourself.

Yeah, I saw on the money board you are headed there in early July. I'll be in Peru from July 9-31. Mostly Amazon basin near Iquitos. It's a small hardcore birding trip with mostly professional birders who live in Latin America. So I'm lucky to have gotten the invite and will be over my head. But I've been to Costa Rica, Panama, and Ecuador. It can get rough but that's how most of the world lives. And there's some great stuff to see and it gives some perspective that most Americans completely lack.

Bumping with a week to go in case I can get some more suggestions.

July 1st - I land in Cusco about 6:15am as we're skipping through Lima. Should get to Tambo Del Inka by mid morning in Urubamba. Day is a free day with nothing really planned. My wife plans on using the spa. I have no idea what I'll do yet so taking suggestions. Should I head to Chincero/Pisac or perhaps Olly this day as well? Dinner will be at the Hawa restaurant in the hotel. This is a luxury property so gotta put it through its paces. Urubamba/wherever lunch recs welcome.

July 2nd - Planning on visiting Ollantaytambo town and fortress 1st half of day. Take cab from there to Maras to do ATV tour of salt mines, terrace thingy, etc. Ends at 7pm back to Urubamba. Taking dinner recs.

July 3rd - woof, this is where tight schedule gets us. Shuttle to Ollantaytambo EARLY to catch train to MP. Leave MP at about 3pmish but heading to Cusco. Will take longer by train but may be a nice way to unwind/rest after MP. Taking suggestions for anything easy to eat. Staying at Palacio Del Inka so bags will be transferred for us.

July 4th - Cusco. May see the ruins near town this day. Really all I want to do is walk around, see the Guinea Pig Last Supper, market, etc. Dinner at La Cocina. Taking suggestions for anything else.

July 5th - may see ruins in the morning or whatever else we didn't do on the 4th. Fly to Lima landing at 330ish. Taking Uber/cab to Miraflores to eat at "amaz" see on Anthony Bourdain's Lima episode. May just have time to walk around a bit and eat, then back to airport at midnight and back to US.

TLDR I need some food recs and some ideas I may have missed. A cool Cusco bar suggestion would be nice, though I can't drink due to some medicine I'm on currently, which should be a separate travel thread

You planning at all to see the Saksaywaman ruins in Cusco? I didn't see that in your itinerary.

I'd highly recommend, and it's pretty easy. Less than a $10 taxi ride and only need a couple of hours to see, but very interesting. Plus the best view of Cusco you'll find.

Ets: and sorry, no food recs really. We kinda just ate at random places we found on Yelp and whatnot.

Ya, I just called them ruins because I was too lazy to grab "Saksaywaman" from a previous post.

I'm thinking I might do this on our half day leaving Cusco. That way I have a full day just wandering around town running into stuff.

I'll do my best.

I'm trying to figure out if I get to my hotel by 9:00am on July 1st if I should try to/can visit Rainbow Mountain which will take all day or go for a shorter one that leads to Perolniyoc water fall or some other ruin/overlook. Might be dangerous for my health to try the mountain on day one even with meds. Ya, now that I've looked I don't think I'll be properly acclimatized for the Rainbow deal at all, looks like it gets up to 13 to 16,000 feet. No bueno. Bummer.

The 16k elevation at rainbow mountain definitely has me out too... i may have blown a hole in my lung 19 years ago, as a college swimmer. Not trying to die on vacation. Your trip looks awesome though.

Just hanging out in the Terminal E lounge in Houston. Hanging out on Tigerdroppings of course.

Southwestern soup isn't bad. Going to crush these cheese cubes for the next 4 hours.

It was like our 5th or 6th day in cusco.

First day was brutal. Had a terrible headache and slept on the tour bus( which I find out later is bad to do, you can die in your sleep) then that night I woke up 4 times gasping for air( don't forget if you have altitude sickness you can die in your sleep)

Did some other tours then went off to macchu picchu. Hiked huyana picchu and it was bad at all.

Thought we were good and settled in for rainbow, took some pills when we woke up. Felt good at the base camp while eating breakfast. Then hiked up 500meters and about died. The rest of the 8 kilos was hell, but the weather was amazing and the scenes were unreal. Then we get about 800meters from the famous rainbow ridge with the 100s of tourist and its starts to hail. We make it to the ridge and the cloud cover is so thick you can't see the mountains. We hung out for about 20 mins and it cleared up enough to take pictures but everything was covered with sleet and snow. We didn't even climb the extra 500 meter to reach 21,000. We were dying and had to turn all the way around. After hanging out on the top for a few more minutes we started our decent. Those hail clouds turned into rain. Hiked back in the freezing rain and mud. It was miserable and we didn't get any good pics, but I'm so glad I did it. I will never forget that

that's a great story. Sometimes when things go south make the best stories. Like when I had a bowel movement at the lake palace in Udaipur.

I can happily report Project Fi worked without a hiccup when we landed in El Salvador.

I'll probably make a thread reporting my Project Fi experience on this trip.

Avianca business class from IAH was pretty much domestic first, so will our next segment, but still nice. Couldn't find space on the United nonstop but as of now I'm ok with that. Would have just meant more hours in the Lima airport waiting for flight to Cusco.

Eta. Project Fi still humming along in Lima.

Eta. Turned right on in Cusco. This is great.

Eta. Working in the valley too. I'm between Urubamba and Ollantaytambo
