I have a friend who opened a new restaurant a few years ago. Of course they had some growing pains at the beginning so they generated a few 1 star reviews.
However, they got their shite together and started getting a lot of 5 star yelp reviews.
The proplem is that they have a 2 star rating because the 30+ 5 star great reviews are hidden and yelp only displays the few shitty reviews
Also, yelp is embedded in Apple Maps, Bing, etc so anyone using those services show him at a 2 star with old fricking reviews from 2-3 years ago
How the hell is this fair and/or even legal?
Do any web nerds on here have any suggestions on how to fix this for him?

Yelp will happily free up those 5 star reviews if he buys some advertising. They really are a shite company, only upside is they don't have as much influence as they used to.

What’s the restaurant? Curious to see what it looks like on my end, I know sometimes people get different results based on search history, browsing, etc

You know, you can sort the reviews by "most recent".

How does he look on Google? I'd guess more people use that.

also blame any idiots who care about reviews. I have never gone or not gone to eat somewhere bc of a review.

Yeah I just use google maps
Usually has more reviews and more pertinent info and I don't need another stupid app on my phone

How can they hide reviews? You can always sort them

Something doesn't add up here. This is either an incomplete or inaccurate description of what has transpired.

I have a couple on there that was great because it discussed the whole customer interaction process through work completion. Then see they’re not “suggested” so i sent a message to them and stating the above info and then in day or two they displayed. Them and their bullshite algorithm that’s “free from back-end manipulation”….but like others said google reviews seem to have more visibility

Yes! That’s where all of the positive reviews are stored and the only way to see those reviews is to click a very small/very light grey/ very hard to find button.
Why are the “not suggested?” That’s just total bullshite!
He doesn’t think it’s hurting his business too much but all over the internet shows sites that are using Yelp for their reviews/ratings aren’t doing a lot more harm than good. The average person who sees 2 star reviews using Yelp’s api does not know any better. It just looks to them like a bunch of shitty 1 star reviews for his restaurant

I used to think the concept of Yelp showing better reviews for paying restaurants was urban legend. But when I owned a restaurant, I learned otherwise. We were consistently low 4* on every site, then Yelp talked me into advertising with them. I did it for maybe 9 months, no perceptible difference, so I stopped. Within weeks our Yelp average had dropped to high 3* with a lot of 5* ratings disappearing, while every other site remained steady. Put up with it for another 6 weeks, then re-upped with them, and sure enough, right back to low 4*. Aholes.

Virtually every source of truth is bullshite. It's frustrating as hell.

It might not be fair, but anyone who expects fairness is a rube. I’m not sure why it would be illegal for a private business to publish reviews of a restaurant.

They axe 5 star reviews as a part of their “verification process.” I called to get an explanation and they said there is nothing they can do, something about an algorithm.
3 months later one 5 star returned and the others never showed back up.

I only use Yelp for pictures of dishes.
Their reviews and ratings have never matched other sites.

It’s not that hard to get reviews on google and yelp with a little effort. I don’t know how many reviews he had, but you offer a discount, free dessert, ask friends and family, etc and before you know it you got 50-100.
I don’t think they are always fair either, but the reality is that any place that kills it with reviews will kill it financially.

Google, yes. Yelp, no. Your Yelp review will be up for about 5 minutes then disappear. And if they decide it’s worthy it may show back up months later

I had written a particularly negative review on Yelp on a building contractor, with detail and photos. The contractor contacted me and asked me to take it down. I refused, so he went to Yelp (where he was an advertiser) and got them to pull my review.
They know their bread is buttered by their advertisers. I avoid Yelp now. It's bullshite.
