Ok, so my home theatre system is a bit unique but basically our TV is wall mounted but we can't really wire anything through the wall without reconstruction to that sheet rock and drilling through a fire retardant board.

Short version - is there anyway to run a wireless optical cable from my tv to my receiver? Purpose is for when we watch Satellite TV. Currently, my Digital Antenna is hooked directly to the TV so the only sound we get is the crap that plays through the TV. Would like to scale that through the receiver.

Any ideas?

Is there an HDMI in the wall ? Does your TV and AVR support HDMI-ARC ?

No, the contractor only wired speaker wire prior to us moving in. Now the walls are all sealed and the hole through a fireboard aren't wide enough to add HDMI cables and such. We'd have to knock through the drywall and redo it and I just don't have the energy or time with 2 little ones running around now.

Dunno but doubtful. It's a Pioneer Elite VSX-50 circa probably 2008.

Are you watching satellite from Dish or Direct, or are you watching over the air local antenna?

Yea, this. Digital OTA antenna plugged straight into TV. Then just the crappy sound coming out of the TV.

Theory being that if I did a wireless optical cable OUT of the TV and INTO the receiver, it'd upscale that sound to what's being broadcast over digital OTA waves.

How is the Sat box connected to the TV?

You lost me here. No box or anything.
Currently: Digital Antenna --> TV --> TV Sound
Optimal: Digital Antenna --> TV --> Wireless Optical Cable OUT --> Wireless Optical Cable IN --> Receiver

seems like it wouldn't be that hard to do this. drill a hole behind the tv and cover it up with the appropriate plate. if you don't have time to do it, just pay somebody to do it. probably cheaper than any wireless solution you're gonna come up with with better sound.

Well, just when I swap over to OTA Antenna, yes. I mean I have an AppleTV that I just swap inputs on my receiver.

Your OP mentions Satellite, so that's where the confusion comes in. If you currently have other devices (DVD/Blu-Ray player, XBox/Playstation, etc) connected to your receiver that then connects to the tv, your best option would be to buy some sort of tv tuner device that you could also plug into your receiver. If not, then somewhere between current and optimal would be to get a soundbar to connect to the tv.

Good point. I literally don't know anyone that does this type of contract work in New Orleans though.

Any suggestions?

i'm not in nola, but you could probably just google new orleans a/v installers. probably wouldn't take them an hour to do it. order cheap cable from amazon or monoprice beforehand. i don't think you can run an optical that long, but your setup should work with hdmi. run an extra one just in case and leave in the wall for future use.

Wireless HDMI for the same restrictions previously mentioned.

You've got it backwards. Today's receivers are meant to be the entry point into your system for all your devices. All of your HDMI inputs, i.e., cable box, Blu-Ray, Apple TV, go to the receiver first and then one HDMI cable (or wireless HDMI) out from the receiver to the TV. In your case, using an OTA antenna instead of a cable box, consider getting something like a Tivo DVR which will accept the antenna input and give you HDMI out which can then be run to the receiver. You use the receiver remote or a universal remote to switch inputs. BTW, no home theater system is complete without a DVR.

Richard at Uptown Audio. They do anything from historic FQ homes to new construction. These guys deal with mega systems and small jobs too.

They are located on Veterans at Green Acres in Metairie...Google 'em.
