My roommates and I are moving into a house and are trying to figure out what Provider/Router set up we should use.

We'd need to run 3 xbox Ones along with one PS4 and our laptops (not all at once).

Well, since neither the XB1 or PS4 use AC wireless, you're best bet is to get them all wired connections. That's going to put a strain on any router.

How expensive would that be?

Each roommate gets one ethernet port on the router. Get some 50-foot ethernet patch cables (ten bucks each) and run them to your respective man caves. Put a small gigabit switch (twenty bucks) at the remote end and you'll even have guest ports.

Would the cables just be exposed, or do we run them through the attic somehow. And if they go into the attic, is it something we could do ourselves, or would we need to get someone to professionally wire that?

Renting or buying the house? Depending on the age of the house, if it's a 1 story house, it shouldn't be too hard to fish the wires through the wall and into the attic. If you are renting, you better check with the landlord before drilling any holes.

Depends on the layout of the house and how long you expect to be there and whether you give a shite how it looks.

Might as well ask the landlord if he'll have the cables run professionally. It should increase the property value by more than it costs, right?

FWIW, we had shitty Pandora Internet or something like that a year ago (complex provided it), far worse than cox, but we had three xboxs running on separate routers wirelessly and it worked pretty well. The separate routers made a huge difference in bandwidth available for each of us. Consider it an investment since you can each pick your own router and take it with you when you go

A decent wireless router should handle this setup fine... That said I don't think having separate wireless routers for each is a good idea or even advised.

I am partial to an Asus N66, but I know that tp-link and netgear routers are very popular.

Most games are more latency dependent then actual speed. Anything over 5mbit is going to be plenty per person. The only thing really that could be troublesome is if you all are streaming video simultaneously. Just make sure you are getting decent internet 20~50mbit and you should be fine.

Wireless is outdated. Run wires. Don't hide them cause the insulation in the walls makes it slower. Blue or yellow cords are the best. Black are cheap brand.

Now I know you are messing with me...

Really the only issue with so many Playstations on one network is Sony's supposed issues with upnp not working. However I have never encountered it, but it is something to keep an eye out for.
