I'm looking to get a new 65" tv in the living room. I don't watch blue ray or anything other than sports and cartoons for the kids really. I am just wondering why it's worth spending an extra $750 to get 4K over a 1080p model.

Last time a bought a flat screen was 6 years ago and I went with 720 over 1080 for the same reason and still think the 720 picture looks fine. It seems like I remember back then that most channels only broadcast in 720 at the time anyway.

You answered your own question, for your needs there is no reason to purchase a 4k television.

Currently all channels are broadcast in 720p/1080i with no changeover in sight, hell there are zero 1080p channels right now. Sure there might be a few movies available on demand or some special event being broadcast in 4k, but they will be limited. Really the whole cable, satellite infrastructure is a long ways away from a full 4k rollout.

It isn't worth it for you. Heck, it isn't worth it for almost anyone. Not a big pile of 4k content and it will be some time before we have a big pile of 4k content.

Maybe gamers would like 4k but then they would need an insane setup to really get the full force of 4k.

In summary. Too early to get one.

It seems like 4k is pointless until they broadcast sports in that resolution. That's when it'll become mainstream enough to regularly film at that resolution.

There's probably a lot of 4k porn. But I'm kinda scared to see that much detail.

I had to talk myself down from buying one just to buy one.

I really couldn't come up with a compelling reason to get one anytime soon.

Hope my old Plasma lasts a couple more years because when it craps out, I'm not sure I will be able to resist the siren song of 4k even though I know it is 100% pointless.

Currently fighting the siren song trying to lure me into an HTC Vive even though none of the current games really appeal to me.

If your plasma dies, buy another plasma. If you can't find one, buy an OLED. Going from a plasma to an LED is quite a downgrade.

do you even Netflix?

With Comcast upgrading everyone to 100/Mbps and up you will limit the ability to enjoy 4k movie torrents and streaming at that resolution.

Seems silly as everyone is on the cusp of gigabyte internet speeds to go with a nearly 20 year old standard.

The masters was broadcast in 4k on direct tv. They are launching new content as we speak.

Is it necessary, no not at all, but the content is already here.

I didn't say NO CONTENT. I said they don't have PILES of content yet. They don't. They have a few shows. Sorry Cad but there is no reason to buy a 4K TV, unless AMAZON has a super special.

So porn is ahead of the game with 4k? Shows where the money is.

It's not $750 more. You're probably looking at the highest end 4k unit vs a mid-range 1080p. It should maybe cost $300 more at most. If you're getting a new TV and $200-$300 won't kill you I'd get the 4k. Otherwise, you answered your own question and you may never use it.

4K is way overblown but there are 2 reasons to get a 4K tv right now....
1. Future proofing
2. It's the only way u can get a tv with HDR or wide color gamut, next to oled that's the technology that interests me the most, but they don't make any 1080p tvs with this feature

I'd just hold out for a year and wait for oled pricing to drop

Sure some events will be in 4k, but there are zero major networks in 4k and there are no immediate plans.

Streaming content over the Internet will be the way to get 4k content the next few years. The cable/satellite infrastructure is not capable of delivering 4k content over major networks anytime soon. They are not even capable of doing 1080p today.

1080p started out the same way. The world cup was broadcast on direct tv a few years ago and now 1080p movies and events are a standard.

There are most definitely plans to switch over. I know of a certain retailer switching all of their locations over to 4k content literally as we speak.

Its much much easier than you think.

No point in disagreeing with you, since you already proved my point.

OTT services and on demand are the only real options for 4k content for the foreseeable future.

Also, nobody is saying 4k will never be there. There just isn't a compelling reason to buy one now. Get a cheap but great pic 1080 and then when that one craps out prices should be more reasonable for 4k or OLED but of course by that time it will be 8k or SuperHDOLED.

Curved.

I'm not really disagreeing with you either. Just saying that its definitely closer than you think and the capabilities are already there.

Maybe everyone should just start bitching to the providers and they would start pushing it out more.
