Hard Drive
1TB 5400 RPM+8GB SSHD

OR

Hard Drive
256GB SSD

I don't store much video. Just a lot of documents.
Also, is there any need for touch if you don't game?

Definitely get a 7200 if getting platters. You can find them cheap.

Most people get both. I have a ssd for op system and physical disk for Steam.

Seemed apparent to me that OP is looking at two different laptops, and one of them has the hybrid and the other had the SSD, and likely no room for both unless it has an optical drive and an available bay adapter.

So, OP, I would like more information about the two laptops in question, because personally I would go with the one that is most desirable to you, ignoring the SSD/HDD. Odds are, anything with a spinning disk can be upgraded to a standard 2.5" SSD with relative ease. We're still in a time when trying to find a PC with an SSD already installed limits your options unnecessarily.

You'll find them in super-portable ultrabooks/2-in-1s, and high-end laptops that may be priced out of your range. Unless you go Mac, It's rare to see a stock SSD on the types of mid-range productivity notebooks I personally prefer (traditional laptops -- 15" non-touch FHD screen, 6-8gb ram, i3 or i5, etc). At best, the SSD upgrade via the factory can cost more than simply buying one yourself, along with a $8 USB-SATA dock/cable, and cloning the hard drive to it.

Yeah - spinners are practically free now - so set your SSD needs - OS and critical programs - perhaps even a handful of games if you do such things - and get spinners for data, documents, photos, videos, etc.

As long as it isn't the primary duty computer - I'd go with SSD. Make up the document difference with either external, usb portable spinners, or an encrypted cloud solution like box.com.

Thanks everyone for the help.

It's just a 17 inch laptop. Honestly, I have a laptop so I can do work in my easy chair, rather than sitting at a desk. I don't carry it around much. I was thinking about getting one of those all in one PCs instead and stop being lazy. I'm looking at Toshibas an Lenovos; had a Dell which I hated; have a HP laptop now that I like at lot but the casing is falling apart after 4 years and I had a screen go bad after 3 months (so I don't trust quality control).

I just use it for looking at documents - some writing and also grading papers online actually - I like the 17 inch because I can see 2 or 3 windows open.
Then I watch some movies (netflix primarily) and surf on it. Nothing big. I run a few stock market programs as well.
I don't really have a budget per se, but for my needs there's no reason to spend more than $1,000 I would think.

Can I get any benefit out of touch?

I doubt you'd need to spend half that for your needs, but something with decent specs ought to last you a good while. And as I said, whatever you get I would still recommend you replace the HDD with an SSD if it doesn't already come with one.

I personally do not see the usefulness in a touch screen on any laptop that does not convert to a tablet (either by detaching from the keyboard or folding the keyboard back). Some like it, but I just can't wrap my head around the idea of reaching across the keyboard to touch the screen when I have the precision of a cursor at my fingertips. It's just what I'm used to.
