What's the deal with slide shows on websites?

It seems like every article I try reading on the internet is some sort of Slide show. Why do websites do this? To increase page views?
Here's a perfect example

When you click through the stupid pictures on this page, it is not increasing page views.
I wanted to see what is coming out soon on Hulu and they make me click through 100 pictures to get the information I am wanting.

Yup. Most of the time I give up reading stuff for that very reason.
But I guess it's paying off for them overall or they would not be doing it. Pretty annoying.
