LG or Samsung. Would you recommend this TV to buy?

Neither of them by a wide margin if you want to talk about the best, but they would certainly suffice.

I had problems with my LG, but I wasn't sure if it was the TV or shitty Cox cable.

Don't know, but I would go with a Sony over LG.

I like Samsung over Toshiba in general, if those are the two options, but nothing is wrong with either. Sony, I feel, has a less saturated (color) display that looks better in my humble opinion. I also think their refresh rates do a better job of lacking ghosting without adding a soap opera effect to the image compared to Samsung. But they're more expensive, and I don't know if the gains are worth the extra cost (I'm a Sony 46" HX-729 owner myself).

Not mentioned elsewhere that I saw, but my older brother has a fairly large (~65") Sharp Aquos that offers about as good of a picture as I've seen. I haven't really had too much experience with any other Sharp tvs though.

You're asking the wrong question. These brands have a range of class and quality. Many consumer issues with TVs are narrowed down to production runs of specific panels, not brands. It's impossible and inaccurate to judge an entire brand based on one or two models.

It's helpful to know who made the panel as well. While Samsung and LG make their own panels, they also source them from AU Optronics, particularly in their non-flagship budget-oriented models. AU Optronics is like the Foxconn of LCD manufacturers. They make panels for basically everyone. LG and Samsung put a lot of money into R&D for proprietary panel technology, but they make a lot of money selling those panels to other companies too, while reserving their best panels for their own TVs. Sony uses LG panels, too. And AU Optronics and Sharp, and Samsung until a few years ago.

The TV you linked would contain a decent LG IPS panel.

My in-laws have a large Sharp (60" I believe) that I cannot get to look good - so there's that.

My older 720p Sony is great but I also question whether or not the picture is worth the premium.

I just walked past the Wal-Mart televisions the other day, just to get a side by side - the 2 best pictures were on Vizio - hand to G-d.

Careful doing this. Stores/brand affiliates can and do manipulate display settings and positioning to make slower-selling TVs more prominent and appear better (turning the LED brightness up all the way is a nice distraction tactic).

Fair enough - and Wal-Mart does push Vizio - but, I was specifically there for that comparison - I'm looking at a cost/value decision on a 4k that will be the new main display at the house. I'm not going to buy the specific model or at Wal-Mart, for that matter, but I was curious as to their prices/model selection and while I was there, just see some of the brands side-by-side.

But, particularly the Vizio 4k they had on display was rocking a pretty good picture, both in isolation AND by comparison.

Hell, baw,(ETA: for a $400 to $500 difference) I can turn the brightness up, too.

Vizio is great for the value. Wouldn't put it close top notch, but for the price it is the best out there.

Best post in here.

When we're talking top models for each brand, we start getting really close and most are really good. Sometimes it may just be aesthetics, bezel/colors/reviews/reliability. I personally prefer Samsung, but appreciate the quality in other brands and panels.

Panasonic 4K Premium

I have a choice in the display panels we use. For rear illumination LED, I spec in Panasonic. It has the best contrast, blackest blacks and looks closest to OLED than any other video wall panel. In military operations centers, the clarity and color accuracy is a requirement. I would never use Samsung or LG in a commercial environment that had any demanding applications. I would only use Panasonic or Planar. Guess who makes the Planar?
