My personal answers:
1. They are the go-to back door into your private life on it, especially when they are online.
2. They stop functioning at the full 100% if you dont put them online to get updates, especially driver updates.
You can no longer just buy a PC to, say, watch DVDs only. No, you have to buy them w/ the purpose of to go online, due to them being put online update dependent.
Any other answers are welcome.

Are you fishing for content to write a paper for an Intro to Computing class? Hold your right arm up like a chicken wing, try and bite your left ear, then google the Internet of Things.

Absolutely you can. If you don't want to go online you don't have to. Why you'd view this as desirable I have no idea, but there's nothing to stop you from going off the Matrix.

So I think you're asking what will be the negative aspects of having an always online PC since you can't really buy an offline PC anymore.
First, you don't have to be online for your PC to function. There will always be plenty of basic free software that will work offline like office suites and such.
2nd, you don't have to run a commercial operating system on a PC, if this is really a concern you can install Linux, use encryption with everything you do and be as paranoid as you want to be.
Finally, the PC may remain the best attack vector for viruses and malware, but for personal snooping, most people are willingly putting everything you'd want to know in the cloud, and I suspect most of them have very poor password policy, so if you crack one account you can crack them all.
If you told someone "Find out everything you can about bourne1978." I guarantee they'd start with your social media and online footprint before they even thought about finding a way to attack your PC. And you might say "Well I don't do social media so I'm safe." But that's not necessarily true. If you have family and friends that do participate in social media you might have more of an online footprint than you realize.

I think that's why they make DVD players.
I disagree that being online is a requirement. Even for gaming, most good single player games work offline.
Just accept that anything you ever put online can be found.

If you never go online, never install non-retail software, and never upgrade any hardware, then there is no need to install the software patches or driver updates.

If you don't use full disk encryption then I don't know what to tell you.
