What OS should I be running on my 2011 Macbook Pro?

My machine is a Late 2011, and I'm running X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63), which is what it came with.

This is what it came with, and when I "Check for updates" it says None Available.

Occasionally my Firefox gives me a notice saying that "Firefox updates are available but can not function on your current OS, but that it can be updated." (or such)

I use this machine 97% for just internet surfing, but use some Excel and Word. It does "freeze up" every couple days with the "Script not responding" message.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Was this a recent purchase or did you buy it new? I have a 2011 MacBook that still does what I need it to do, granted not quite as fast as a newer mac with ssd. I always update the OS with every new release and Sierra works fine. Have you given any thought to resetting it and doing a clean install of OSX?

No it's not recent, I bought it new back then.

It pretty much does what it's supposed to, I was just wondering if it would perform better... and was I just dumb by not "upgrading to a newer OS."

Seems like in the past I would get a screen message advising me to move to a new system, but I don't recall what it suggested.
