We are thinking about making the switch. We have had Verizon for years and have grandfathered unlimited plans. They increased the cost 20 bucks per line last month, and I am not inclined to pay 40 extra dollars a month. I am in the ATL and T-mobile works very well here. For those of you that have T-mobile or have switched do you know the answers to these:

1) What is the best plan for us? T-mobile has so many options with data stash, binge-on, etc. My wife typically uses 4 gbs a month, and I use about 8 gbs. However, when we travel to NOLA or any family vacation I will use 30+ gbs in a month having the kids' ipads tethered (this happens about 3/4 times a year).
2) Are there any deals on phones with T-Mobile? My wife has an HTC one M8 which does not seem compatible with T-mobile, and I have a Samsung Galaxy s4 with a cracked screen.
3) The only place where my service will be bad is my house. I think I saw CAD say he got a booster. How difficult is it to get one?
4) Does binge on work with tethering? If I turn on tethering and my kids are watching Netflix on the ipads, will it eat up my data?
5) How is service in the greater NOLA area? When we go there we spend most of our time uptown, Kenner, Metry.
6) Is there still any value in selling an unlimited Verizon plan? If so, how do you do it?
7) Over the summer t-mobile had unlimited plans 2 for 100. That now costs 170. Is there a way to weasel the old price? If not, they are currently offering 4 lines with 6+ gbs for 120. With data stash, and each line being able to store 20 gbs, we could conceivably bounce from phone to phone when we travel (to tether), but it seems like a pain in the arse.
8) With unlimited you only get 14 gbs of tethering per line. Does binge-on eat into that?
9) What are the best phones out right now? We are android inclined (my wife hates iphones).

Thanks for the help.

1. I have 5 phones unlimited calling/text and 2.5gb data each that runs me $120/mo after all taxes and crap. With free music and free movies we never reach that cap ever.

2. Get a nexus 5p for $299 or an inexpensive moto g or x. Tons of great android phones out there right now for cheap.

3.tmo support is world class. Just ask for the booster and they'll give it to you for free.

4. Not sure about tethering. I think it should work.

5, tmo is rock solid in metro areas.. It's even you get out in the boonies you'll have problems.

6. No idea

7. Ask them. Tmo has never failed to fall all over themselves to make deals for me.

8. Not sure about the tethering. Just ask them.

9. See #2. The new Google phones are about the best phones that exists in the world right now and they are cheap.

I have T-Mobile 2.5g per month.

I like it mainly because it's so cheap

The wifi calling is the greatest invention ever.

I usually go over my data but it doesn't matter because i have wifi almost everywhere else.

i don't have great service between new orleans and BR (mainly on spillway) and in rural mississippi. Other than that the coverage is fine.

I recommend switching. Put the money in a college fund.

Really? I have 6 lines $120/mo but that's before adding the data. What deal did you get?

1) Two lines with 6 GB is $100 right now at T-Mobile. I'm not sure how you use your data, but if you use ~8 GB with Verizon, you will probably be very comfortable staying under that with T-Mobile after you consider that all music and a big chunk of video will no longer count towards your data cap. As far as service, It's more than acceptable. I get higher speeds tests than my sister who has Verizon in a lot of places in the NOLA metro.

2) I second the shop around advice.

3) No experience here as my service is fine at home.

4) Yes, tethering is also zero rated for the included services apps, so no it will not eat your data. I did a test and posted some data when Binge On was first released. Binge On and the Hotspot

5) See #1

6) I would definitely think there's value in it, but I have no idea about how to go about doing it. I see people selling the service on eBay all the time. It's a Godsend to people in rural areas who would otherwise have to rely on satellite

7)You should talk to someone at T-Mobile, but in Reddit people are saying that 2 unlimited lines are actually only $140 after family match. Even if you only have 6 GB you can tether forever with Binge On not eating your Data. One note about Binge On is that it is only truly unlimited with an unlimited plan, If you have a hard cap and get throttled, then Binge On gets throttled also effectively eliminating the ability to stream.

8) No, Binge On doesn't eat into the Hotspot Data of any plan that's eligible for zero rating, even the limited plans.

9) Nothing REALLY stands out to me right now, just shop around.

Pretty sure that's a promotional plan that's no longer being offered. Right now 6 lines with 6 GB each is $160.

In the same boat. Had Verizon since 2001 I think, and were looking at switching when prices went up. I haven't seen anything increase yet, however. Did yours already go up?

Using Binge and the hotspot, can you stream through your smart TV with the apps?

Smart TVs technically aren't supported for zero rating, but not as a matter of policy, they were listed as supported at first along with game consoles, and set top boxes, but people were having problems getting data zero rated so they were removed from the officially supported list. That doesn't mean that it won't work in every case, or even the majority of cases, it's just that it's been enough of a problem that they were removed from the officially supported list for the time being. Officially they support tethering to laptops, desktops, tablets, and handsets.

I can say personally that I am getting zero rated on the Roku which is no longer officially supported but not the PS4. Others have reported zero rating working through the PS4 so YMMV. I'd assume Android and IOS based boxes like Fire TV and Apple TV have the best chance at working. Also it may have been fixed as I haven't tested since release but streaming through a browser was supposed to be zero rated also, but it was counting against my data. I had to stream through the Netflix Metro app on my laptop to get zero rated.

ETA: I'd assume TMobie is having trouble getting the content providers to send a lower resolution stream or having trouble verifying the lower resolution with some setups. I think the bitrate for Binge On is capped at 1.5 mbs. They sure as hell won't be zero rating 5 mbs streams anytime soon.
