Verizon Introducing $20 Fee to Upgrade Your Smartphone To Cover Their "Support Costs"
This comment sums it up quite well:
"Phew, I had almost gotten worried that Vzw had run out of ideas and ways to charge me for absolutely no reason!"

Yeah, they are pretty out of control. My bill is ridiculous compared to what I'd pay for a smaller company that uses their towers. I've been with Verizon since around 99, but to charge $20 for something I can do at home in 5 minutes is ridiculous. They have been slowly pushing me away over the past 5 or so years, and this might be the straw

Cost me $60 total to upgrade my iPhone 4 to a Samsung Galaxy that I bought on amazon
I was pretty damn pissed off

Switched from Verizon to project fi and bill is under 30 bucks a month. Combination of tmobile and sprint towers. No contract. International data plan same price as domestic. 10 bucks a gig.

So will I have to pay $20 every time a put my sim card into a different phone? How many "upgrades" will it be if I break my G3, put my sim card into my old Droid 4, go on Swappa and order another G3, and put my sim card back in it?

jesus. can you elaborate on why?

It shows "Customer Provided Equipment" as no charge. I don't plan on buying a phone direct from Verizon in the future.

I don't know if you still can, but you used to be able to switch phones through the Verizon website

i read somewhere (can't remember where) that the $20 only applies if you upgrade through verizon. if you buy your phone elsewhere, it does not apply. so i read at least.

You still can if it's going from a phone with a sim card to one without a sim card. Nothing needs to be done if it is moving a sim card from one phone to another.

I thought every carrier had an upgrade fee that was like 40$? Or maybe thats just the connection fee per line. I can't keep up.

I thought Verizon an other companies had already gotten rid of "upgrades".

There has to be some sort of correction on the prices of all these technological services (phones, cable, internet)
The prices have gotten so obscene I just don't see how they can continue to rise at their current rates

You still can and I have routinely as long as the phone you are switching to is comparable to your current phone.

Then you should switch. It amazes me people will pay these extortionist companies whatever they want. Verizon has great coverage, but unless you're in some rural area all the time, why pay so much more than TMO or Project-Fi?
