Used to be a card-carrying member of MAME scene but fell off the wagon

Can anyone point me in the right direction for setting up some game emulators with the least amount of hijinks involved?
fireTV would be cool since its on the big screen tv but really dont know what all the kids are doing these days.
i had the ultimate mame setup once-upon-a-time and would not rest unless my ROM-report came back clean
i cant even imagine what kinds of hoops you have to jump through these days and i'm a lazy frick so i'm hoping someone can give me some pointers.
not interested in being 100% pure like the old days, just want to play some old school games with as little bullshite as possible.

my coworker casts his emulator(s) from his phone/tablet to his TV. Uses a bluetooth controller to play with.

I use RetroPie on Raspberry Pi 3.

is it still a PiTA to find reliable sites for ROMs?
i haven't downloaded, cleaned and merged ROMsets in probably 15-20 years but i remember it was always a hassle.

The emulators I have on my tablet (GBA and DS), the rom websites are easy to find through google. Download a zip file to my tablet, then the emulator loads the zip file.

Yes, those are RGB LEDs and change based on the game you are playing.
I got my sets from Gamer Underground back in the day. Got complete sets for most everything to about PlayStation/N64 era and those are mostly complete of anything I would play.

I actually maintained a mame resource for awhile. It was a site that provided you with a step by step guide to downloading everything you needed from cabinet art to overlay backgrounds to the metadata text files which pulled in the history or trivia about the more popular games

Was in your situation a year back. I settled back into the scene by using the newest build of Mame for arcade stuff and then learning about using RetroArch and its 'core' systems for all other retro stuff.
Used both Mame and Retroarch with a front end ( Launchbox ) for a clean presentation. Launchbox seemed to be easiest front end that will give box, panel, screenshot, art with little initial setup. Most of it is automated.
Retroarch has the added benefit of having builds for a lot of different systems including Windows, Android, etc.

BYOAC has been the place to be for awhile. Easy to find anything you need except where to download roms, they don't allow that stuff.
