TV on, have sound, no pic, input is correct

Time to buy a new one? All I know to do is check to see if all wires are well connected.

Backlight could be dead. Look at the TV from a couple angles and see if you can see a very faint picture

Not necessarily true. If he's running his sound through a receiver the HDMI cable to the receiver could be fine and he gets sound while the cable from the receiver to the TV is bad and he gets no image.
