It's capable of one thing at a time. It has less RAM than my phone. Browsers these days use a shite ton of memory, so if she's a multi-tabber, that ain't happening.

It has a 32GB SSD so Windows will boot fast and the one or two programs she can use at any given time will launch fast. It has no additional local storage, so if she intends to store media it will have to be on the cloud, and you'll need to renew after the year trial on OneDrive.

I looked at that one but the internals were very much lacking. I only spent about $20 more bucks than you and got a much better processor, twice as much ram, and way more internal storage. At least it's pretty though

Also, if you got it from Amazon, is it not too late to cancel the order?

Actually I tried to cancel not even 2 hours after the order and it said it had already been shipped. I guess Amazon is so efficient these days you have to be on the quickness.

Looking at the specs I felt like it was much lacking in the hardware department, but after reading thorough reviews on tech sites, they all raved about it. Even comparing it to some of the laptops I had in my OP, and saying it outperformed them. Have I been duped?

I know you know a lot more about this than me, but I'm wondering why it's so highly recommended?

It was on sale last week for $249. Got it for my daughter who couldn't care less about computer specs but at least I can rest easy knowing it was a pretty good deal.

It only outperforms the others because of the SSD, so everything launches quickly. Who knows, maybe your gf really only has a couple of browser tabs open at any given time and doesn't multitask a lot.

But it's cheap, and it sounds like cheap is what you're going for. If you wanted to make an extra effort and spend another $50, you could get the first ASUS in your or OP and swap out the HDD with a 120gb ssd. More practical advice for you is to keep the original box and documentation so that you can return it if it doesn't work well.

If she has poor computer browsing/maintenance habits like every female ever, all of the laptops in this thread will perform like garbage in less than 6 months.

Unless I missed something in the thread, this seems like an ideal Chromebook situation. Toshiba Chromebook 2 is worth a look unless its too late\cant return.

That's what I originally had proposed to her, but she didn't like the whole chromebook idea.

Chromebook would have even less functionality than the one you bought, so that was smart.

If she's not a big multitasker, she will like the snappiness of the OS because of the SSD. However, the biggest issue will be storage. 32GB is barely enough for Windows 8.1 alone if you include pagefile, recovery partition, and Office. Everything else would probably have to be stored on Microsoft OneDrive -- it's not a bad way to go if you are always connected to a good internet source because OneDrive is seamless with Windows 8. Problem is it's not free if you need more 15GB. After her 1TB onedrive trial is over, monthly charges will be $1.99 for 100GB, $3.99 for 200GB, or $6.99 for 1TB + office 365 (the best value if you want a lot of storage and office 365).
