Tech Board New Home Construction Ideas

From a tech aspect what are things to plan for and what are things that I should avoid?
What are some simple methods of doing home automation without going crazy with the budget?

When running wire/cables- cat 5/6 can cross electrical but shouldn't run parallel correct?

Needs to cross at a 90 degree angle if I remember correctly. As for my suggestions:
Use a home-run wiring setup for cat6, cable, and whatever else you plan to run (surround sound maybe), to a central tech closet. Put a nice switch in there with a patch panel and good ventilation.

Not directly tech, but related: try to get them to use some scrap wood like 2x10 to block out walls where you think you might hang heavy things like tvs or large frames. I got them to do this in my house in almost every room and it makes it much easier. I don't have to locate studs and I am not limited to mounting on a stud. They put two 2x10 between 3 studs so I have about a 32" wide by 20" tall area in most rooms.

This is a good idea. Aside from the Cat wire something I got from here nad love is USB outlets. I have 17 throughout the house and can just plug up just a wire to charge phones and tables at will.

When I built a house, a ran all my CAT and Coax cable in conduit. I figured if there was ever a technology change, it would be easy to swap it out.
This is what I used. You can get it a Home Depot.

Another good thing to have are USB ports on your wall outlets like so:

Thank you! Adding this to my list. I thought about this in the past and forgot about it until just now.

One thing to remember is that when it comes to anything with wiring or structure, it is always much much MUCH cheaper to incorporate it into your house when you are first building it than to attempt to add it after the fact

Yeah, might want to run power out to several places around the perimeter of your roof for security cameras / christmas lights / whatever.

I agree. I would also run wires for outdoor speakers, COAX for a TV, gas lines for a grill, and water lines for a potential outdoor kitchen as well.

Depending how large your home will be I would run ethernet cables to a few drops in the ceiling to mount wireless access points. Run them from a POE switch.
All to often people are asking how to increase the signal strength of their wifi by adding range extenders, having access points within the home would provide a strong signal throughout.

Isn't everything going wireless? If so , why spend money on Cat cable (except for the WAPs)
Why not just:
Install multiple wireless access points
Incorporate a tablet control panel
Locate speakers and plan out your desired controllability (most of which is wireless) - door locks, HVAC, audio, lighting
Locate a control closet for tech if needed

quote:Because you can wire an entire house with $100 worth of cable, and the connection is much faster and of higher quality. Half a dozen HD wifi security cameras can essentially saturate your wireless bandwidth (not to mention other devices streaming video), whereas if they were wired your network would hardly notice the load. It also allows for PoE in case you don't really want to run power to the camera. You also won't have to worry about your neighbor's wifi or the microwave interfering. Also, if you change your wifi password, you won't have to worry about changing the settings on potentially dozens of devices.

Wifi is convenient for portable devices, but a hassle for stationary devices.

Yeah this is what I'm doing. Much rather have my iMac, blu ray players, apple tvs, playstation etc, that are never going to move, be hardwired in than needlessly taking up my wireless bandwidth.

Why is that? Expensive? No good? Haven't really done any research yet on automation.

Meh... Until the standard changes in 5 to 10 years. Or less.
Waste of money IMO
