I know this has been going around Reddit, but Teamviewer has been getting hacked. Usually I take these reports with a grain of salt, but my buddy just recently got hit.

They logged in to his computer using Teamviewer. Once logged in they had access to his Google account since his password was saved. Once in Google, since he used Chrome, every username and password he saved is logged and can be seen.

Buddy got his 500K Hilton points stolen and money charged to his paypal.

I have since uninstalled.

why the frick would you leave something like that (1) running (2) installed

The program did exactly what it was designed to do..let someone in

Well, completely ignoring the fact that it is MEANT to only allow certain individuals in, the program is great when you have in laws who consistently have problems with their computers because they don't know how to use them. Not only that but logging in to my own computer anywhere has its uses.

Someone you don't want in?

I hope you don't have home wifi, because one breach of security (as in the case with teamviewer) someone has access to your whole network. Something it was "designed" to do, by your words.

this...

their security was garbage to begin with. the implemented a few measures to mitigate this in the future.

this is what happens when you install 3rd party remote access software on your PC

you have control over your home network, you do not have control over a 3rd party cloud based application.

if you dont secure your home wireless network with wpa2 these days you're an idiot

May have been a reach

So the idiots who have this previously installed, like me, do yourself a favor and uninstall.

You have to type the windows password to get the passwords to show up.

Teamviewer denied their site was hacked last week (called it an internal DNS issue) and now they are saying a significant number of accounts have been abused. Great management there.

typical response when an unregulated company gets pwned. deny until evidence is insurmountable

Having just done this yesterday, I think you are incorrect.

Go to any google site. Click the circle in the top right corner where you would select which account to log in with. Select "My Account." Then go to "Connected Apps and Sites", lastly go to "Manage Passwords."

You can then see every password Chrome has been asked to saved.

there is a little more to it than that, but
(1) you're saving passwords, so that is on you
(2) not noticing someone rooting through your system is on you...

This wasn't some bug that sent back files, your friend watched it happen

OK, looks like they recently redesigned the whole settings area. Now it just asks for your Google password, you still have to type it. Once you do that, you can click each saved password and view it.

About a month ago, you go to the same place, but when you click the button to view the password, you would be prompted for the windows password.

Not arguing with you about the passwords, just showing how we thought it happened.

As far as being oblivious to it and watching it happen, the program allows for you to log in to someones computer with or without you present, so it is very likely, actually most likely, the person logged in when we wasn't at the computer or even aware. It would be pretty hard to not notice someone taking over your mouse and doing all of this right in front of you.

Which is his point.

I take it you don't interact with the general public very much and how they use their computers

I actually do, to an extent, every day....But I don't use teamviewer to do it, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone...

Both of my grandparents have this installed on their computers, as it's 100x easier to fix whatever issue they've created when I can just remotely log in. From what I'm reading, this hack doesn't affect the free/personal version of TS where the computer ID and PIN change constantly, but only affects the people that had actual Teamviewer accounts?

I'm still going to get them to uninstall, just wanna make sure I don't have to have the "you might wanna check your bank/CC accounts" talk if I don't have to, as they surely will freak out.

I have an actual account since I have about 5 family members who constantly have computer troubles. The friend who got "hacked" does as well.

I never install it. I use it a lot for work and personal use and I always have the remote side run the "Quick Support" version which is supposed to unload out of ram when it's closed and I use the portable version to connect. TV doesn't complain about "suspected commercial use" that way.
