I would like the Tech Board opinion of the best spam filter options.
Is it a third party service that filters the malware, spam from email like AppRiver or is a hardware option like a device from Barricuda?
If it's a service, which, is the best?
If it's hardware, which is the best?
ETA - We are an Exchange shop
TIA.

Are y'all in an exchange environment?
We are a Gmail shop and gmail actually handles this really well. Only thing I really get reported are spear fishing attacks now.
ETA: I've used a Mcafee hosted solution and microsoft's Exchange Online solution and both were OK.

I had a great experience for several years with GFI MailEssentials on our in-house Exchange server until now. Now we're moving to Office 365 / Exchange Online though, and I will be exploring a hosted solution (probably ProofPoint). The nice thing about hosted is that they will usually offer e-mail queuing as well as a webmail interface if Exchange Online happens to go down.

hybrid proofpoint deployment is probably the "best". been a while since i've looked at their architecture but i believe spam filtering happens in their cloud and malware inspection happens in the onprem appliance

We are about to upgrade to Exchange Standard 2016, and will be using Proofpoint Essentials Advanced, with Cisco Umbrella on the local PCs. We've been using Contego hosted spam filtering, but feel this is a better move given what Proofpoint can do for small to medium sized environments.

We used AppRiver at my last job amd I was thoroughly impressed. Easy to manage, integrated with hosted exchange after the fact, users get reports amd can request release of an email, admins can whitelist amd blacklist as needed.

ProofPoint seems to be the consensus here. Thanks for the input.
