in the market for a good sound bar, that give that surround sound trying to avoid putting speakers in ceiling

No such thing.

I talked my dad into buying the Outlaw Audio soundbar and he opted to run it without a sub. It sounds really good.

JBL SB400. It's amazing. Not as 100% immersive as a traditional setup, but the sound is so rich.

Just purchased a Sonos sound bar. The sound from it is amazing. You can purchase a subwoofer (wireless) as an add on.
I can then link it to other Sonos speakers around the house. Very nice system.

I've had the Sonos Soundbar and sub for a few months and absolutely love it.
Yesterday, bought 2 Play-3s to complete the surround setup, as well as a Play-1 for the home office.
I am such a Sonos fanboy, but that products are great.

Sonos a seems needlessly expensive. I received a 300W 2.1 Channel Sony Soundbar w/Wireless Subwoofer for Christmas a gift.
Installation is simple. Plug in the power cord for the sub. Plug in the power cord for the Soundbar. Plug in the optical audio in from the TV using the included Optical Audio cable. Turn the TV and the speaker on and you're done.
It performs extremely well. It can be purchased for $250. At that cost you could install an excellent Soundbar with Bluetooth and a Wireless Sub in three rooms for 50% of the cost of a 2.1 setup for a single room with SONOS. You also need an additional piece of hardware (their $50 "Bridge" that acts as a hub which allows separate components to work as one unit).

Good info.
How does the sound compare between the two of those systems?

You don't need a bridge to have sonos components work together.
Glad you like your system. I like the Sonos system. Can also control the whole house audio from one gizmo.

If you want to do playbar and sub (and surround) you either need the bridge or you have to have at least one component plugged in with ethernet. I was skeptical too when I talked to the gut at best buy but he was right. I read it on their site and you also get a prompt when you set it up with the Sonos app.

"and surround" that's the key phrase here.

So, if you want the playbar and sub to work together, something has to be plugged in with ethernet to your network. If you just want multi room speakers, you don't need anything plugged in with ethernet. Just FYI.

If using the Sonos PLAYBAR in a home theater setup (with a SUB and/or rear speakers), the PLAYBAR, or another Sonos component like the Sonos BOOST/BRIDGE, must be wired to your network. However, if using the PLAYBAR independently, without a SUB and/or rear speakers, you can connect it directly to your router's wireless network

Also with other non sonos soundbars....do they have all the music streaming features? I really don't know never looked. Love all my sonos stuff so no need to look. And the sub sounds damn good...have one in my kitchen as well on top the cabinets for the speakers in there.

I click Input on my remote 4 times and my system is in BT Audio mode and can stream anything playing on my iPhone or iPad...

This is my first surround set-up, so I have nothing to compare it to.
That being said, I really like it. From the Sonos Controller App, you can toggle between Surround modes (ambient and full), as well as fully adjust the volume of the surround speaker independently from the main volume.
That extra dimension of sound =
I am a little disappointed in the Play 1. Sound quality less than amazing. I may be spoiled by my bar+sub, though.

I received one play 1 as a gift and was underwhelmed. I then bought a second to make a stereo pair and the difference is night and day. The sound quality is excellent with two play 1's paired together.

Good to know! Maybe I'll pick up another one.
