What is the best option for surround sound/music in new construction home? Some claim Sonos is the way to go. Is a good quality receiver with in ceiling speakers just as good or better? My installer says if I go with Sonos, all I would need is a center channel and maybe a subwoofer.

Bang for your buck Sonos. But if you want more than just a soundbar with a sub and want to spend more $$$ then do some architectural speakers with an audio video receiver.

You also need to consider if you want more zones of audio.

Does not compute.

Sonos claim to fame is wireless, not sound quality.

If it is no issue just go ahead and run the speaker wire and get you some quality speakers to pair with a decent receiver.

Plus down the road when new standards come out you just need a new receiver.

If you want quality sound, go AVR.

Thanks for the input. I wasn't completely sold on the Sonos system to begin with. I was leaning more to using a AVR and now will be going this route. I will only have two zones: living room and patio.

i've got both

you definitely want to hardwire speakers throughout your house and outside. hook your sonos up to the receiver and use the app to control the music via pandora, amazon music, spotify, et al. i've also got a play1 that i sometimes set up in the front where i don't have built in speakers when playing with the kids or to welcome guests for a party.

Not sure how Sonos works but I have yahama receiver with 2 zones 10 speakers total. Love that you can listen to TV, Bluetooth, stream wifi, or radio. Makes it very easy with the music cast app.

ALWAYS hard wire Ethernet, speaker, coax, and even lengthier power cords (from a mounted TV down to the floor to an outlet--or put a couple outlets in the attic) in the wall during construction in every living/bedroom...

Also wire in a couple ethernets with plenty of extra cable for future access points.

...you never know when you may change router/modem locations

I bought a Denon XR2400H receiver and wired it to SVS sound system speakers. The Denon has wireless capabilities for two zones. In zone 1 are my wired SVS speakers and in zone 2 will be wireless speakers I have yet to select. The HEOS operating system on my Denon allows wireless access via my computers and/or my iPhone where I can select music from my collection or an internet radio station while also giving me volume control for each zone, which sometimes means soft inside and loud outside.
