It would have come on at an Onkyo predetermined volume level.

that very well could have been the case. i remember being blasted out of my house the next morning a few times when i wanted to play music because i had Chronicles of Riddick playing the night before and needing to find a solution to that.

i thought the harmony was magic; the first time i was ever able to truly put all my remotes up in a drawer and forget about them.

My Pioneer lets you configure the power-on volume to one of three levels. This doesn't require any control smarts.

Among other things, I can set to any level and bump volume +/- 10 dB using a combination of my MCE remote receiver, Autohotkey, and a C# program I wrote for the necessary 2-way communication using TCP/IP. One can probably do the same with Eventghost, but I never had any luck with program. I've tried it a couple of times and managed to crash it within a few minutes each time.

what is your opinion on sonos?

eta, you're right. found this in an old AVS forum:

quote:

In the menu option for Miscellaneous you can adjust the maximum volume as well as Power on volume. Try to check those setting and confirm that they are accurate or at least set to factory standards of "Off" and "Last".

thats exactly what i did.

is it possible to get scammed through amazon? seems worst case scenario amazon refunds my money.

I hope. I also hope you get the speaker. I'd like to get in on a deal like that. The seller has another one listed.

i used amex so worst case scenario even if amazon for some reason wont refund my money, is a 2 second phone call to amex. they are amazing when it comes to fraud. they don't even bat an eye when i call, just instantly put the money back into my account and go after the seller.

I think it's great for what it is. I have a Play 3 in my office and use it quite a bit. It's setup to stream my music services or playlists and music from my phone. I'm a big fan of Sonos. The sound quality is quite good for the price and you can't beat the portability.

I also have a Crestron system for the rest of the house. It is a more powerful solution but also much more expensive (many multiples). Additionally, it costs money to update (which my current system sorely needs). Crestron control is a system that is beyond the budget and needs of most.

Late to the party but I love my sonos stuff. With that said I prefer my connect amps and ceiling speakers. But I get the lure of the play 5. I have a play 1 in my daughters room and its used as a alarm in the morning. I do like the sonos playbar...and I love the subs. They dont go as low as some of my music likes but they sound damn good and link to the system with ease. Before I had a AVR with different zones and all kinds of inputs to get music to it....was a PITA. Got 1 connect amp and its been a done deal since. Open app...pick room....search for what I want and go.

Curious to see how this goes for you

started out with the play 5 and i'm going to simply carry it around from room to room for awhile and see how it goes like a bluetooth speaker on steroids.

i am thinking its what i need for the screened porch room since its big and with no walls a larger speaker may be appropriate but may be overkill for some of the interior rooms.

hoping to fill in a couple other rooms with play 3 speakers (pool room, living room) but i need to see first how well the coverage goes with the 5.

The nice thing about that Play 5 is that you can move it around to see where it sounds the best. I think you'll find this useful in the porch. Most people make the mistake of mounting speakers onto the house and pointing them out where they play to an infinite void with no structure to contain and reinforce the sound. By placing a speaker(s) pointing towards the house the exterior of the house acts as a barrier and helps contain and reinforce the sound. You generally get better bass response by placing speakers in this manner when using them outside. You also don't have to play them as loud to get the desired sound level.

CAD, i dont know if this was answered already, but you should be able to use your Google Play account with the Sonos app to play your own music. (I have a similar set up with my Apple Music account).

Also, that is a hell of a deal on that Play 5 Speaker. Kudos

All of this. Also you will have a better time with more than 1 speaker in a room spread about playing low vs one on one end blaring to cover the whole area. Keep that in mind when your testing it out...

They sell at list unless you buy used or find some magical deal on a new one like CAD.

CAD I just found out today that Lutron has remotes that control sonos. LINK

Honestly, I found myself today on my patio wishing I had a knob to adjust my Sonos speaker volume. Seems like the lutron product will fit in perfectly.

Now I just need a place to mount it.

You need to have a Smart Bridge for the remote to work.

Sorry brah. I deal with SONOS and companies like them everyday. Premium brands like them are usually price protected. I know what restrictions they have on me to sell their product so I knew this deal for you was to good to be true for a brand new unit.

Beside price I think the product is perfect you. Take a look at the Heos products. They are a little bit cheaper.
