Sorry if this has been asked, feel free to post link if it has but I currently have:
1) pioneer elite vsx 50 receiver
2) 4 pre installed speakers in ceiling
3) 1 center speaker (small)

I already have a random Sonos play 5 that we use in a room for random music. My question becomes, can I purchase a Sonos playbar and replace my center speaker with this?

Can I plug the playbar directly into the optical input in my receiver and my other ceiling speakers still work?

Finally, will this turn my receiver into a "source" that I could then play TV sound to another Sonos (like my play 5 outside)?

Also I have my own sub. That's connected to the receiver so curious if the 4 in ceiling speakers and the sub would work in sync with the playbar?

Then ideally I could pair that to my random play 5 outside and listen to football games while I drink my face off. That possible?

Dunno if a connect or connect amp is what I need though. Really don't fully understand the difference in those 2

I'm not a sonos fanboy but I would assume the connect is just the gateway for an amp where the connect amp is the gateway with a built in amp.

Agreed. I think I can just get a connect (since the receiver already has a built in amp) but unsure how to connect the "connect" to my receiver. It has 2 in (Red and Black) and 2 out (Red and black) but I have a 5.1 setup. Sort of confused there.

Also need to ensure that if I do get my receiver + 5.1 setup connected to the connect, can I then play my TV sound to another play 5 in another room? I believe the answer is yes there but curious if anyone has any expertise?

This may help, as I dont have a definitive answer on this (yet) and do not own a PlayBar:

LINK

Keep in mind, the PlayBar (and sub to an extent) is designed to work for those types of setups where someone only has a TV. I do not believe it is designed to work in addition to a 5.1 channel system already integrated into an area. (though a workaround seems possible).

In regards to playing TV sound on the Play 5, as long as you have and sound you want set to output to one Sonos device, you should be able to pick it up as that additional audio channel. I have done this with a Connect w/Amp, where I have the TV audio going to that RCA input. (This may be short lived, as I cannot control the volume on a standard remote and have to use the Sonos App to do so).

This link has some better information:

Looks like there are conflicting ideas on a Connect w/Amp being able to drive rear speakers that are paired to a Play Bar. I see nothing along the lines of using a Connect without Amp to do this with an existing 5.1 channel setup.

One final question. What if I got a playbar, plugged it directly into my bedroom TV which doesn't have all the receiver nonsense. It's just a TV that's connected to our ATT UVERSE receiver through an HDMI cable.

So theoretically, couldn't I connect the Playbar to my bedroom TV through my optical connection and then use the playbar as my main TV sound in the bedroom? Also, that would then enable this TV to pair with a Play 5 say outside, correct? That would then allow me to listen to an NFL game on the deck or whatnot?

Hope so...

You can do that exactly. I have a play bar with sub in my bedroom and also have a connect amp running rears for 5.1 in the master. I can then play that TV sound on any of my other sonos zones. Your play 5 is a zone.

The connect hooks to your receiver via opticle on a input...like a CD player.

Note when you hook to your TV it's via a opticle out. Chances are your TV doesn't output 5.1 just 2.0. Most don't some do. The smart apps built in will output DD 5.1. A workaround is plug the hdmi into a box first that strips the sound out the hdmi before going into the TV. So hdmi into box and out of box into TV. Then out of the box with optical into the play bar.

Yea that's basically what I have as I have ATT UVerse. So my HDMI cable goes out from my uverse box into my TV. Guess from there I could just go optical out from TV to the Playbar.

Question though. DAMMNNN. How big is your bedroom that you have a Playbar and a Sub? I think the playbar would help the sound in this bedroom but I must have a small bedroom. Maybe 30feet by 30feet (guesstimate).
That seems like it would blow my socks off while trying to get ready for sleep.

Yes you can just go optical to playbar especially if your not trying to go for 5.1. I think the playbar/sub sound better when getting a DD signal but it is an extra step.

Master isn't too big about 15x15 but it sounds great! I'd have a sub in every room if I could. I do have one in the kitchen...sounds awesome and with it laying on its side you don't see it.

Ha, dammmnnn. Well if I get a spare 700$ I may have to buy that Playbar.

Surely I'd listen to music a lot more with those all around my house. Right now my Play:5 is always on in my daughters room and constantly playing lullaby music and that's about it!

I love to listen to music but at my last house it was a chore (not really) to play it. Turn on receiver...zones...find another remote. This house I did 8 zones of sonos connect amps and some playbars and listed to music just about every day. Pricey but works so well.
