I just got a new TV, nothing special Samsung led. Always had plasmas before. But the, what I now know is called "soap opera effect" is crazy with it. Is this a led thing? Refresh rate thing? Are there any settings that will reduce this effect? To me it looks like raw footage before final processing of shows. I'm sure we'll adjust, but it sure is annoying.

I don't know why this bothers people. Does it look "too real" or something?

And it has to do with refresh rate I think. What's your TV?

I mean when you switch to 60 to 120 Hz its looks a lot different. I don't think you can deny that. So I think the general discontent with it comes from the sudden change.

After a while you get used to it.

I think the setting is called Auto Motion on Samsung tvs. Turn it off.

Yeah, every brand has its own name for the interpolation feature. It's terrible.

this is easy to get of...

it's in the settings and also sometimes a firmware update..

but yeah google your tv and soap box and you should find exactly where and how to turn it off..

All motion enhancement on LED tv's needs to go away. I turn mine off and it's fine.

It doesn't have to, though. 120Hz does not increase the frame rate of broadcast or film. The motion interpolation setting has nothing to do with the difference between 60, 120, and 240 hz TVs.

It was probably invented primarily to sell 120Hz TVs because it's tough to do a side-by-side comparison any other way. Interpolation will look beautiful in fast-panning stock video of nature shots, or even sports. But get the TV home and try to watch the Avengers or some shite with interpolation enabled and you'll feel like you're watching a behind-the-scenes special.

I see it on friends' tvs all the time. They think I'm just seeing things when I tell them it looks strange. But it looks horrible to me.

In looking around on a fix I came across jutter adjustments. Not sure if that is how it might be labeled on your TV.

What exactly do you see? "Too smooth" or "looks like video" doesn't mean anything to me. Smooth is good! Real life is not stuttering 24 FPS. I've only had Sony LCDs, which have been said to have "minimal soap opera effect" and Panasonic plasmas. I've turned off the motion enhancers due to artifacts like little lightning flashes or distortions in small areas on the Sony and hitches in motion on the plasma. That said, there is a test video on Spears and Munsil 2nd edition of a chick swinging back and forth in a mesh hammock, and it looks MUCH better with interpolation on the plasma; it's so much smoother and real-looking, while the raw footage is a stuttering mess that's hard to watch. Unfortunately, the technology makes other things worse, so I don't use it.

Just pick up their remote and go to the menu and turn that crap off. They should thank you.

You'll adjust. It took me about 3 or 4 days to not notice it anymore.

Don't sell yourself short. You're an Aggie, which also makes you stupid, too.

But I'll join you in the a-hole club. My extended familes and friends used to hide the remotes from me, I was such a snob about their pictures. Then I discovered that my Note 3 has IR and I downloaded a remote control app called Smart Remote. Now, I frick with everybody's televisions, especially those in Wal Mart and Best Buy! They turn on that soap opera crap and the stupid kids that work there, who think they know shite from shinola, walk around and tell old people and gullible millenials how awesome the picture looks when it looks like crap.

This is what I mean by what I see.

LINK

The look with the soap opera effect on is distracting and terrible looking to me. And on a big TV it kind of makes me nauseous after a while.

Just turn off the setting. You should look up some calibration settings for your model while you're at it cause stock display settings are set to have the television stand out on a show floor. Looks like shite in the home.

Because it looks terrible.

I don't want to see a movie that looks like it was shot with handheld camcorder.
