So if I wanted to find out the IP of a fake FB account...

Is this possible? I would imagine that the only way is involving Facebook themselves, even if I could get the person to communicate with me, sniffing the traffic would do no good since technically its coming from FB servers/IPs right? This is over FB messenger.

You could always phish it. Set up a fake website and send them to it.

thought of that, but the account has not been logged into since the initial FB message that was sent.

Well this doesn't sound illegal at all.

Sniffing traffic on your network isn't illegal. You can install wireshark for free and capture the traffic coming in and out of your PC. It will tell you the public IP of the servers you are communicating with. However in this case you would only see FB's messaging server's IP, not the IP of the other person you are messaging.

99% chance this has to do with someone cheating. Not worth your time.
However, I'm always interested in learning about shady shite on the internet.

If you know their email, there are a few sites that will capture that info if they read your email.
