What functionality specifically are you trying to gain by rooting?

The stick cannot be rooted or jailbroken, however you can sideload android apps easily by using a PC and fire tv utility app. The sticks are particularly popular to install kodi (formerly known as xbmc. Tvmc is a customized build of kodi with certain plug-ins already installed.

You don't need to root to add kodi/ xbmc .I've personally installed it on 8-10 fire TV & sticks
The instruction linked above are pretty easy to do
*the video quality ranges from 1080p to complete shite depending on source.

There is a long thread on it, but youtube "add tvmc to firestick" use the tvmc install linked above instead of kodi and it will install a bunch of the channels for you and save lots of time.
