Looking to set up DirecTV on same property as house, but too far to run line. Not looking to add an additional service location, not sure of TOS, but essentially it's a "tailgate" location.

Can I just buy an additional dish and box off craigslist and set it up myself? I know I'll have to activate the additional box.

Make sure the box you buy is not a leased box! They wont activate it. Call and ask them to verify that the box is owned and give them the. Serial number. Dont take the person you are buying it froms word either.

Most boxes are leased boxes now, so you may have trouble finding one.

Also, the dishes arent easy to point anymore.

Thanks for the info.

Aren't easy as in, I can't do it...?

If I get a tech to come out they will want a separate account, which isn't happening.

I don't see how you will be able to just activate a box without them being involved.

Yeah, I'll have to activate the box through them and pay the $6.50 or whatever it is.

Pointing the dish is not difficult. Just make sure that the mast or pole is plumb and adjust the tilt and incline according to the dish setup instructions for your zip code. For azimuth you just need a cheap compass (or smartphone) to get you close then have someone watch the signal meters on the TV as you move the dish left to right. Get the signal strength as high as you can then tighten everything down and you're done.

Another question

I found a dish on slimline disc on CL, guy wants $50...I'm gonna offer $20, what do you think?

Also, can I take a box from a bedroom and use it to set it up, should their be any issues since its already activated?

Thanks!

If you are going to do this, why not just call them and tell them you want to add another box in your home. Act like you got or will get a new TV. Get it activated and then walk it out to the new building and hook it up to the dish you have.

That's what we did for tailgating. Added a box to my home service and just kept it in a truck with a dish and hooked it up out there.

Granted the last time I did that was about 5 years ago.

Yeah, that's what I'll probably end up doing for the box, but I don't want them to come out and install the dish, because they will want another service.

I'll just add another room, once I get the set up right.

when is the last time you tried it?
Pointing it to catch the HD channels is very difficult.
Pointing it to catch the SD channels is simple.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's going to piss you off.

I'm running a few locations off one account now. It will work. It's not that hard to get an HD dish pointed. Get the mast absolutely plumb, set angle using stamped marks on dish, dial in the azimuth on the 101 satellite first. Then fine tune the other satellites using the meter on the TV. It's easier if you have a TV visible from the dish while you dial it in looking at the signal meters on the TV screen. Make sure you select the right dish type prior to set up.

Do you have any issues with multiple locations off the same account?

No issues at all in the last 5-7 years. My camp house has had a receiver that was originally in a bedroom at my house. Don't call Directv to come to your house for service it you don't have the secondary location receiver at your house or tell them it's in your RV. If you get to far from your house with a receiver you will not get local channels. Maybe 150 or more miles dependent upon size of Directv spot beam for local channels area.

That is essentially what I a doing as well. I have found a DirecTV slimline on craiglist that some guy had on his balcony at an apartment, with a bedroom box, can 1 person set it up?

Yes if you can see the signal meters on the TV screen. I use a small portable old school tube TV to set mine up. Make sure you know what dish you're getting and select the right dish during set up. All slimline dishes do not have the same LNB (bulb looking things on the dish arm). Some have single bulb with three eye looking things and some have multiple bulbs. It's easiest if you get the exact same dish/lnb you have at your house but if you can figure out what dish/lnb you're buying it's really not a problem.

Single HD bulb with 4 coax outputs

Multiple bulb with 4 coax outputs

Multiple bulb with 1 coax output (Single wire managment or SWM)

Great, thanks for the info

Sorry for all the questions, but why does it make it easier if they are the same?

Also, the one I was looking at on CL only comes with a pole that was used to install on a balcony, maybe not the best bet I take it.

You don't have to change the dish type in the setup menu prior to aiming. There is about 20 different types of dishes to choose from. Are you running a Genie with whole home in your house set up?

I think in the setup menu from top to bottom looking a pics I posted. Dish type is
Slimline 3
Slimline 5
Slimline 5 with SWM

No genie, may move that way soon tho. It's actually my parents house that I'm working on.

I need to get them to send me a pic of what they currently have.
