I have brighthouse network and they are currently charging me $9 extra every month for a "wireless fee" and "modem rental". I'm going to buy my own modem to drop my monthly bill.

I currently have the Motorola SURFboard SBG650. Is this simple as ordering the same modem off ebay and plugging it in?

Does that modem suck and I should get a different one?

Thoughts?

Yep. Get a used one off ebay or amazon

Then you probably have to call your isp to make them reactivate that modem

Might as well ditch the gateway in favor of a dedicated modem and separate router. Brighthouse supports the SB6121 and SB6141 modems.

I have no idea what any of that means. I'm a dumbass with this stuff so it needs to be simple.

Just tell me what to buy.

You can replace the modem with an identical model from anywhere, call your ISP, read a few numbers written on the modem (protip: write them down or take a picture of them on your cell phone and have it handy when you call your ISP.)

If I were in your shoes, I would replace it with two pieces: a [link=(www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B00723KZTY/ref=mw_dp_olp?ie=UTF8&condition=all)]used DPC3010 for $18[/link] as your new modem and a [link=(www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HU7C7Q6/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1436676387&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX200_QL40&keywords=ea4500&dpPl=1&dpID=31PxAbnr8RL&ref=plSrch)]refurbished ea4500[/link] for a $35 router ($2 and change gets you a 2-year warranty on the router). I owned this router myself and have recommended it to friends. The setup is nearly fool-proof, especially if you use their cd to set it up and walk you through it. It will be hard to get similar performance at this price, barring some good finds/sales, and these are both regularly available deals for the last 6mo at least. This is my current recommended setup for practically anyone who's asking the question you're asking (no specific details, general "I want wifi at my house after a one-time modem charge instead of paying monthly").

ETA: iLikeLSUToo, have you seen a DOCSIS 3.0 (8x4) + n900 MIMO 3x3 (chipset not supported by any of your favorite 3rd party router OS last I checked) set come in under $50? Yes, it's a used modem (have purchased two from the link with zero issues, both in the last 8 months) and refurb'd router, but this isn't your typical Craigslist-quality stuff. But for the very most basic network configuration on a budget, I'm interested in your take. Forgive the fact that they're both Linksys (and both pre-Belkin buyout) products, I'm no fanboi. It just happens to be somewhat of an anomaly that I can't find anything particularly "wrong" with to send people to the much higher prices (albeit new, comparably priced) SB4161 and anything that will outperform this n900 for near $35.

The problem with the DPC3010 is that it doesn't appear on Brighthouse's approved modems list, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't work. As for the router, I used an EA4500 for several years with no complaints, other than it couldn't reach all of the back yard reliably (and my much-more-expensive ASUS AC68 is not much better in that regard either). My EA4500 was purchased second hand from a coworker, and I eventually gave it away to someone else (as far as I know, it's still in use). Overall, the combo is cheap enough that it's worth the experiment, and I'd imagine it's more than adequate for 90%+ of the population.
