Are you certain you want to do that? It doesn't play nice enough with SMS to be my default messaging app.

No. It cannot be made default because it does not handle SMS. They did just update Google Messenger with a new look and are preparing it for RCS - which is supposed to be the future of communication to replace SMS.

It really bugs me the the screen won't rotate in screensaver mode(probably not Pixel specific...never tried on my N6). I'm trying to stay stock as much as possible and would like to use it as my nightstand clock, but since it won't rotate to landscape, I'd have to have a dock.

Is there a way on Pixel XL to make Allo my default messenger instead of what I have now (stock)?
wait until allo fully integrates SMS capabilities before doing that.

My Pixel was delivered yesterday.

For people who switched out of iPhone - Is life much harder without iMessage and FaceTime?

it shouldnt be. most people have a gmail account wich means they have a hangout account and now an duo account. which i would bet ate better video chat applications anyway.

No, I'm not certain of anything Android related ...

I am really enjoying my phone and the O/S. Just a little learning curve for me.

I'm not sure allo will ever get SMS support. Which is why it's mostly a bust outside of the assistant. And if you have a pixel you already have that built in.

Too bad too because it's a really nice mms app.

So is the stock messenger on Pixel the "best" or most preferred text messaging app to use?

I don't have a pixel so I don't know what comes stock. Personally I use textra but I also have large chats like our tailgate group set up through groupme.

I hate sms. But the women/family in my life can't wrap their head around the idea of moving away from SMS.

I use Messenger. Textra and QKSMS are good, if you want a little more customization.

imessage doesnt work on android. so if someone switches to android and his friends continue to send him imessages he wont get them.

it's like android user switching to an iphone and continuing to use hangouts except its not like that at all because unlike iOS android has compatibility for both.

Ah, yeah I've heard of those issues. My iPhone was so long ago I guess it didn't affect my ability to text nicely with IOS or Android peeps with my Windows phone.

i just hate that their are so may different platforms to have conversations on. SMS messaging apps, Hangouts, GroupMe, iMessage. I wish there was just different apps that could read all of them.

I guess ignorance is bliss I use whatever the hell was already on my phone and have zero messaging issues other than this one a-hole who refuses to activate group texts.

I've heard tons of people say that Hangouts and Duo are both very quirky. iMessage and FaceTime are seamless. I think these will be the only 2 things I will miss. Sucks as these are the two things I use the most. A/w, we'll see.

I use hangouts for my sms/mms. Wish they had just worked on making it better than making two separate apps (allo and duo).

Hangouts may be quirky and has been unpopular for some time. Duo is brand new and has a lot of positive reviews. Duo was just released along with Allo. I think you would be just fine using Google Messenger for texting (it will text everyone who uses iMessage or regular SMS) and then use Duo for video calling.
