Outdoor HD antenna

Anyone here have one of these? I know they sell them just wondering if this is something that has to be professionally installed?

I have one I got from radio shack that I mounted to the ceiling rafters in my attic. Not amplified and I get all of the local channels out in Central. Took a little while to get it pointed in the right direction but it's been rocking with no problems for 6 years.

Yeah, I bought an RCA one and an amplifier and mounted it in my attic. Had to run a plug in there as well. It is about 4 feet long and I get all the locals here in Birmingham except for the PBS channels. I talked to a guy I know that works in IT and he said several of them had to build antennas to get that one.

Where do you live? Many HOAs don't allow them.

I live in Baton Rouge. My HOA are a bunch of old busy bodies with nothing left to do but look at other peoples stuff. The one I am looking at is smaller than a Direct TV dish so I don't see how they would have a problem.

Yes, here's my setup I posted in the stickied thread.
Like I said, I would get a different tuner and now with WMC going away in Win10 I'm still hoping to come across an easy replacement. I've played around with nextpvr (probably my next direction) a little but didn't get it fully setup before I decided to buy the WMC upgrade for $10.

I have a rather large (12' x 12') antenna mounted to the rafters In my attic. I used it in the early days of HD--12 years ago when cable didn't broadcast local channels in HD. I have a motor installed on it that will turn the antenna to the optimum signal (this can get technical--it had to be programmed for that. It has to do with where the towers are and what direction they shoot their signal).
It was useful after Katrina--I turned it toward BR and picked up the local stations there as all of the NO stations were knocked out. There was also no interference after the storm as many signals were down--BR came in clear as a bell.
I now use it for FM--I can pick up stations within a 200 mile radius when I turn it to the proper angle.
But to answer your question, yes, they work well--just get them as high as you can.
As far as HOA trying to ban them, they can't (yeah, I know it may look trashy, but they can not legally Ban an outdoor antenna--the FCC will not allow that). Most people don't know that, so they just agree to the HOA rules.You have the right to put an outdoor antenna up on a pole in the air--no matter where you live.
