Enjoyed playing some music in google play and simultaneously access the maps app to see how traffic was stacking up.

I was talking yesterday to an associate and emailing a file to him, like I do a lot. He asked if I needed to hang up. I was surprised and laughed asking why. He said on iPhone, you have to hang up. I told him not on android, especially if you find the right apps that do what you need.

Definitely not. I do this all the time.

It depends on the carrier. Some carriers can do both at once, some can't.

There's your answer. iOS won't play videos in the background without a bit of hacking. It will do background audio from AUDIO sources no problem.
